Hello everybody! I am new here. I just in inherited my Great Great Grandfathers 1948 Allis Chalmers WD. It is in decent condition for the age and ran just about a year ago. I have taken it fully apart, ordered new parts, paint, etc...
Couple of questions: (sorry in advanced if this is the wrong area for this) 1) I see in a lot of pictures a "pulley" or wheel looking thing off the frame on the left side (look at the tractor) - mine doesn't have that. There is a covered up hole where one would go I guess. What is this? Should I add this during the restore? 2) I took the front bumper plate off and there is all the steering gears and some nasty oil or gear oil or something in there. Hardly any in there currently. - QUESTION - What "oil / liquid" do I use and How much do I fill this up? (Again, front plate which is covering the steering gears and the manual crank rod/shaft) Thank you all again! Any answers and advice for me would be greatly appreciated. Hoping to get it looking back to its glory and keeping passing it down for many more generations to come! :)

That is where a belt pulley would go for powering feed mills, thrashing machines, saw mills. I like any tractor that has one and I also added it to dads WD45 when I restored it.
I believe the weight of oil that is supposed to go in the steering gear area is something like 160 weight or about like pancake batter but don't quote me. Some will just pack it with grease as the old seals don't hold the thinner stuff in very well. Hope this helps. |

That helps a lot! I really appreciate it. One of the things I ordered was an entire seal/gasket kit. Replacing all of them as I am taking everything apart. Below is a picture of it. It is now in the garage completely torn apart. :)

Welcome to the best tractor forum out there !! Family tractors are special, good for you making the effort to fix this one up. In my opinion I would look for old family photos to see if there ever was a pulley on your tractor in an attempt to keep it as close to original as possible. I also suggest getting a good service manual and a parts book as they will be of great help to you, Gerald (on this forum) has them to download unto your computer I think. Keep us posted as to your progress.

Where I grew up, most WD's and WD45's had a belt pulley laying around. You always had to remove it for the mounted cultivator, so as time went by, less and less belt pulleys were used. There were lots of D-17's in our area and I never saw a belt pulley on one.

It is good that you know your tractor is truly a WD rather than a WD-45 as it is badged.
It must be nice to have a tractor that belonged to your GG grandfather......something that a lot of us would like to be able to say. Nice looking tractor.....it should restore really well.

I have serial # questions I. e. WD 200017 is what year? And engine WD213468GA is what year. It gets a tad confusing. Thanks

I put a belt pulley on mine, so I could run a Letz burr mill... I'll probably move it to the WC when I get her done... I don't grind often, but when I do, I prefer to use the best!

A WD series chassis with serial number WD200,017 is a 1955 model year and WD45 chassis, which would have a curved gearshift lever. The engine is clearly a WD engine stuck in a WD45 chassis. A real WD45 engine serial number is 45xxxxxx, not WDxxxxxxx. There are always more engines built than tractors. Engines were sold for other uses.

According to the engine serial number info posted on here about 15 years ago,
your engine #213468GA would indicate it was built in 1949. The engine # range for that year is 210719 to 238901. Now, that WD engine could still have all the "innards" from a WD-45 engine. Let's say, for example, the original engine froze up and "busted" and the then owner came up with a good WD block in which to put the remains of his WD-45 engine. Lots of possibilities given the age of these old tractors. That WD engine would have originally come with the 3" "short" head". If it has the 4" "tall head", then someone definitely has done at least some swapping of parts.

Thank you for the great information, the more the better.I took the head off and there is a 45 inside what looks like a Chrysler emblem (pic to follow) on top of the block deck. Very intriguing.

I also have a late 1953 with some unique thing on it, most notably 3 pins through the top of the transmission cover which are so perfect they must be factory but not positive. A beautiful factory top link and the ol flip up seat.

Dr Allis, what would cause the amp gauge on my D17 to jump back and forth + to -? I have replaced the generator, voltage regulator, and the amp gauge, original wire harness looks good. |

Great looking WD and a family one to boot! What are your plans for it? I have a 45 apart and it is a project!
Good picture! Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to more inof as you move forward. Not sure what the 45 in the pentagon means. Not sure that means WD45 engine. Need to measure stroke. Regards, Chris

Brian - Yes and Thanks! My brother and I weren't terribly sure it was a WD-45. My grandfather is older and said he thought it was a 1947. So we started researching it from there and after finding the serial for it, it concluded it was actually a 1948 WD.
I did some more research to 100% confirm this. 1) the gear shifter is straight and not curved or angled. and 2) the engine block has a side push rod cover. Which to my understanding, this was removed in the WD-45. :) |

Thanks for all the reply's. The I am trying now to grind off the old paint and wash off all the crud and grease from the hydraulic system leaking over years and years. About to remove the back hydraulic arms and hoses. Starting to get tedious, but I know the end result will be AMAZING! Here are some pictures from yesterday. I have some parts on their way. New manifold and studs. New Radiator, New WD decals. (not WD-45 which is on there). New Allis Chalmers paint. New gaskets all the way around and New belt!
Need to figure out if I can reuse the Carburetor and the old 6v Generator. :) |

I'm pretty sure that head sittin' over there on the bench is a "short" head which would
be correct for the early WD engine.

Thanks for sharing the progress pictures! Yep sure looks like a WD! Could still have a WD45 crank in there!:) Check your stroke. 4 inches = WD, 4.5 inches = WD45!

For all who were wondering, I just checked and 4 inch cylinders! I removed the head lights today, the housing that holds wiring and the starter.
Anybody know where I would get a new or rebuilt like new 6v Generator? Not sure if mine is bad yet, (it did run a year ago just fine, but has been sitting since). Just in case it is ruined/bad, I will need a new one. I have seen A LOT of people convert to a 12v, but would like to keep it as original as possible. :) |

4 inch pistons that are a "flat top" are WD pistons and should have a 4 inch stroke. If the 4 inch pistons are "dished", it probably has a 4 1/2" stroke making it a WD45 short block.

I have no idea and honestly wondering the same thing!? I thought for like a front attachment maybe? But the brackets don't have holes or any hydraulic hoses going up there.
Anybody?

If your generator was OK a year ago, it's probably still good. If you want it serviced to make sure, send it over to Steve at B & B. He's usually on here and is a sponsor.
