180-185-190XT-200 is direct drive in high side and 20% slower in low side......for example 15.5 MPH in 8th and 12.5 MPH in 7th......A D17 is 15 MPH in 8th and 10.5 MPH in 7th...quite a bit slower ratio.

whats the difference in ratio between high and low from a d17 to a 180 or 200 i thought ab using the power director gears from a newer tractor in mine so there wasnt such a drastic drop in speed when u drop it in low. our 200 seems like it dont drop as much speed.

looks like the 426 is about 2 inches longer than a 301 i had to cut the radiator shell to fit my 301 but about 2 inches back. i used stock d17 frame rails looks like u could prob use them with the 426.

Thanks Bob!!!

I finally got a grill and some torque tube side sheilds. Had to mod the panels to make them fit the 180 tube. They are not the greatest but for 20 bucks for both i couldnt go wrong.

Well not much going on yet. But i did get the bushings made for the front axle, now just to mount it up. Then i stole a hood off our series 4 d17 gas and put it on just to see what it would look like with the 426 in there. lol

Also we are bidding on 4-426's at a online auction. One of them is the counterweight crankshaft one. So im hoping we can get it. Plus get a better block than this one. This one is junk in the lower sleeve bores. It would need to be resleeved and that 60-70 bucks a hole.

Well i hate sitting in the house instead of working on the d17, so i worked on the axle. Plus got afew things too.

The oil filter...

Front axle made.

I will be putting some bridging under it to heavy it up some.
Rack and pinion.

And kind of a little mock-up.

The spindles are off a old wagon the was laying around here, so it gave up its spindles.

The 426 is bolted into the frame rails now. Using stock 301 engine mount holes. Heres some pics...

Had to cut the grill shell to fit the front cover.

Let me know what ya think.

Very cool, don't let the skeptics talk you out of it. We pulled a D17 with around 130hp for 8 years or so up to 6000# class. It is a 1957 first year made there was a chip off the back of a tooth on the pinion gear and the local senior mechanic at Allis said don't worry about it and we never had any problem with any of the drive train except motor of course. The PD never slipped a bit but it was shimmed properly in the beginning. We had to dyno it at the belt pully because the PTO was not there as we had the back housing off. We bolted a 540 splined shaft off a combine to the bely pully hub. The guy at Allis said he had to caliberate it to get accurate HP. One time at a dry, gray clay track with some gravel we had it stripped down for the 4000# class and I got to pull in 4th low and it hung in there now that was fun.

The 180 gears are all rounded off. And to buy a set or gears would be as much as a different rear. I will just call up heitmans and he can hook me up with a good rear if need be. The d17 trans will hold more that what I will have for power. Plus it would be easy to swap in a different rear anyway. Dont worry yourself over how I want to build MY tractor!

youve already got the 180 rear end.  why not fix the gear jumping and stick that in instead of blowing the 17 rear up and then having to swap?  if you fix it you know what you will have, if you swap another rear it may stay in gear for awhile, the collars probably have some rounding on the teeth, how long is it gonna hold with that kinda power?

Medford has a great place to pull. I pulled at the fair this past summer at the county fair Saturday night, ended up all over the track and in the right break real hard. The clutch was slipping so bad on the JD B dragging me around the pits it barely got me on the scale. Looking foreward to going back there with the new engine and turbos.

Good luck on your project.

Also took the tranny input to the machine shop to be shortened and have a speedy sleave on it for the seals.
Then i priced a new shaft bearing, well lets just say i will stick with the old one. Its $211 Bucks!!!!

Also I live in a little town north of Medford. So i will be wanting to pull at the local pulls around here. Like Jump River, Colby (which is a black top pull) lol i will be pulling in a lower gear.

The adapter plate was pretty easy. it is the old 7040 plate just machined to fit the 180 bell.
Also i do know of a few tractors, a buddy of mine has a old Super stock tractor that pulled with the stock clutch shaft. And that tractor was thought to be bout 2000 HP back in the day.

Im goin to see how the finals hold up. and if they dont i will either have the stock gears and shafts cryo treated and try that. Then if that dont work i will just find me a 180-185 rearend and tranny and swap it in.

Now for sheet metal, I will be using stock d17 side panels that i will peice a section into. But its not set in stone. I will figure it out when i get that far.

Now for what class, most of the pulls i got to are just run what ya brought. But otherwise id just have to pull in the open class or super stock. Im hoping to have it around 5500 pounds. Then maybe up to 7500. I will be running a set of 18.4x26's from the front of our 8050.

With the smaller size of tire it will put less stress on everything.

For this year i just want to get it running. I wont be able to get a steel flywheel, so i will only be running maybe 2800 rpms. But it will be getting a 320cc roosamaster with 4x18 injectors with a hx52 holset turbo. Im doin some trading for the pump and injectors. Im pullin the hx52 off my dodge.

Your only gonna tear it up if the rubber bites and stops spinning.  If you think  any of those multi turbo/multi engine tractors actually have enough behind the flywheel to hold the power, you are smoking your socks.  Stick one of those things to the ground and watch the pieces fly.  Tractor pulling is about 2 things, making power and fixing the first thing that breaks.  Mr Peterson is man enough to share his build and I appreciate that.  If I had the funds, I'd be right with him doing something different with some orange.  I'm curious about one thing, though.  What class you gonna pull in and where can we see it in person?
