Folks,
I always have something elses in the vast warehouse to dig out and look at. This bench vice came from my Uncle Jacks garage. I remember seeing it on the cornere of his bench near the big sliding doors to his shop. He had two or three dump trucks, two or three semi trucks and farm equipment. This vice saw a lot of work holding things for repairs. It was not babied. I took it off his bench about 6 years ago. It has set around since then. I would like to have it in my shop if I get it built. Found several areas were broken and welded. This vice was made about 30 miles from where we live. The nut had been broken in several places, weld was rough I gouged out the sl*g and mig welded to clean up and strengthen. Acme screw had been broken and welded, again I cleaned it up and added some weld of my own! before: After: Set up the e-tank and have the base cleaning now: Missing the locking collar on the shaft, need to order/ find one. I tried just a hose clamp to see if every thing worked. McMaster Carr should have one. .875 shaft dia. Acme thread is a .875 x 5 Regards, Chris Edited by Sugarmaker - 31 May 2020 at 8:08am |

Folks,
Updte on the Yost vice. Have the parts cleaned up some and trial fit up. Have the new collar from Mc Master Carr. Friend did a search and this vise could be near 100 years old. Hope to get it back into service this year for many more projects. Regards, Chris

Easy to use and abuse a vice, but they are so handy at time. Welds look 100 times better

Chris, that is definitely a treasure! And since it belonged to your uncle makes it even more valuable to you. You have got it looking great. The new ones won't last near as long, that hoss will be around when the newer ones are in the scrap pile.

Thanks Guys!
These are a little unique because a lot of the newer vices have the flat area behind the jaws where you can beat on stuff. This one does not, so I may have to find another spot to whoop on things! Trying to up load this text file which I don't do often. if it works its just another piece of old data about this local company. Well that did not work, the first time, took a picture. Picture may not be very good?:) Was thinking it might look good in PO#1? Maybe too bright for a vice?? My uncles other favorite color was a dark green, like teal. most of his trucks were green. Regards, Chris

Folks,
The collar was modified to be just a touch narrower. Added some primer: Not sure how much it will take to break it again. Will go easy on it for the next 100 years!:) Regards, Chris

Good work Chris. Here's a pic of one of mine. It didn't need the rehab yours did, just a coat of paint and a stand. Sometimes I really like the stand and others I wish it was mounted on a heavy bench.

Mike,
These old vices are sure a helping hand in the shop or on the farm. I can see advantages both ways. Portable and solid bench mounted! My Yost will most likely bench mounted. Thanks for the picture of your ATHOL vice. Looks much taller! Regards, Chris

Chris, that Athol is a great vise, wish I had another one just like it to mount on that grey bench you can see in the background. Maybe someday I'll find a nice big heavy one at a sale to mount there.

Folks as I go into shops now I take note of the old vices. Lots of brands! My son has a nice old one mounted on his work bench also! Can't remember the brand?
Hope things are good out there! I am looking forward to having the Yost do some work holding for me. I have a rolling work table that I may mount it on temporarily till I get a home for it built. Regards, Chris

I picked one up, the other day, kinda weird. American Scale Co, KC MO, model G1C. Can't find a pic on the innernut, anywhere. Its a 3" swivel vise, bit that swivel part is big enough, that you coulda cast a 6" vise, for the same amount of metal, thats in it. I kinda like the oddity of it, and the price was right...

I'm lousy at posting pics. Oh, and I got the number on that vise wrong, should be a #61-C, if someone can find anything out about it!
