 Topic: white 549 vs john deere 2700 plows?

Hi, just wondering how a John Deere 2700 plow would compare to a white 549? 5 furrow 18, I will be pulling with the all is 7040.. both priced the same. The white is autoreset I think the jd plow is too. I would require auto reset. I missed out on a 2000 allis plow, which was hydraulic reset.

I really can't say about that model of JD plow but out here, even JD guys who bleed green have an IHC or White spinner plow hidden in the shed. They both pull much better then the green thing.

Go with the white. The steering cylinder on the deere is expensive to replace, its a good plow but parts will cost you dearly.

Yeah I have a white 508 right now, but only 3 furrow 16 inch. How about a Massey 880 vs the white? Are hydraulic resets better than spring?
I would like a kevernland but cant afford it lol.
The john Deere is closer, are they that bad? I would like one that turns the soil pretty good.

I had a White 588 5 furrow with spring resets. A heavy plow and good for it's era.
Traded it for a Kverneland vari width 5 furrow in '94 and now have a Kveneland 6 bottom. I wouldn't plow with anything but a Kverneland now.

I would consider JD to the bottom of the list. Have a JD that I call a one way. Throws dirt down hill but won't through dirt up hill. MACK

If you want to stand the dirt up on its edge, get a deere. If you want to turn it over, get an Oliver or White. They also pull a lot easier because they sit closer to the tractor. You couldn't give me a Deere plow, as Mack said, they are the bottom of the plow list.

While a 7040 may pull the 6 bottom, I'd strongly suggest staying at 5 bottom. Oversized plows back in the day is why so many of the "big" tractors now are so worn out. Going big for a plow day(recreational tillage) is way different than plowing 160 acres because you have to lol! The 2 pinion differential will thank you.

yeah.. Im not going to get a 6 furrow. I sometimes see them fairly cheap but I do not want to kill the tractor.

Don't forget, most larger plows can drop off the last one or two moldboards.

Another vote for the White.
In Idaho where they loved plowing, IH was super common, but Whites were out there. Like said above, many a JD tractor out plowing rarely pulls green.

IH 710 or 720 will be the top of the heap for all the plows mentioned. You'd probably even pull 6 bottoms with one of those. Not that you really should, but it would.

Having worked at a CaseIH dealer in the parts department I'd say a 720 over a 710 by a ways in my book but my book also says there are lots of cast parts on these IH plows that are common to break and are very expensive so look for a parts plow also.

Neighbor pulled a 710 6 bottom 20", I believe, with their 7040 PS. It pulled it pretty decent but because I think it was a 20" it covered not so good. The 7040 did wipe out a final drive in the process.

If you buy a later IH, make sure the 3pt steering pivot will turn. If they set out in the weather and not used for some time, they will freeze so tight they will not come loose. Got one I spent 1 1/2 days trying to free up. Gave up, going to send to China in pieces. MACK
