 Topic: What's it cost ot OH a WD45 diesel?

Looked at a WD45 diesel today. Pretty rough, started with a shot of ether, but has a pop pop miss to it and growls pretty good at low idle. Antifreeze was clean, but the oil filters had been removed and bypassed! Never did quit smoking, oil leak around the injector pump, seemed to have decent power. Good: rear tires and pretty nice 445 AC loader. I feel I would be sticking my neck out quite a ways if I bought this thing. What would you give? What can a person expect to stick into it if the motor needs overhauled?

Well the loader is probably worth that....right now he is at $3500, but did come down from $6000....
Of course the fellow with the 5040 thinks his loader is worth $3500....so I guess the tractor would be free, right????

Ask Butch in OH how far you can get into an overhaul on a 45D...I think he told me one time if the block ends up being bad up top it can cost you around $3000 for a repaired block, if yours is good enough to be used as a core.

TomMN could give a realistic figure on engine, all depends to what level you would be taking it to. Sounds like it will be needing lot's of attention soon.

Eldon, my dad bought one in New York for 3500 and by the time he got done with it he has right at 9000 in it and did most of the work himself. FYI

I have 4500 into my dad's 45 diesel engine. Block was cracked between all the cylinders but the middle one was cracked in two places and was loose. 400 for a good block, had to have the head sent out and redone, that was 900 I think, rebuild kit, machining work, new fuel filters, oil filters, etc. And we didn't get into the injector pump, only had to reset the injectors or get into the water pump, both of them were good. I'm trying to remember all the big stuff, but I did have some labor in there as I was too busy and the bills on this thing were piling up and I didn't want to mess things up so I ended up having the local engine shop guy do all of the reassembly of the engine, so that all I ended up doing was install it in the tractor and bleed out the fuel system and start it. But she started up and ran like a top and still does. I can get the wife to get out the receipt and see what else was done but I don't like looking at the receipt too much, as it gets depressing.

Eldon, I hate to say this, but with a good loader I would snatch up any WD45 Diesel that runs at that price. I know the engine work can be costly, but I can spend that money at my pace. You just don't see them that cheap very often, and if you don't want the loader, sell it, to pay for as much of the repair as you can.

Does it have power steering? I know that is kind of trivial, but I believe that it was kind of a rare option on the wd45"S. Darrel

Just had a block redone @ Midwest Cylinder @ Nevada, Ia. The block was in good appearing shape, but the machine shop was a little skeptical. Turn out the counter bores had to be resleeved plus other details, cost was $2000.00. Expensive bragging privilege to have one and represent it well

Just got done working on a 45D for a guy, didn't overhaul the engine, but the pump and injectors needed work. Told that when they open the pump, it would be $1000 minimum, ended up with pump rebuild (and some parts aren't available anymore if they are bad) and six new injector tips, was $1500. Then you hope when you buy it, that the crank, block and head are good. Still have to work on 1 sleeve in my 45D, stand out is too low, and it blows head gaskets.

Looks like I got away cheap when I went through my 262. Midwest would have welded 10 head bolt hole cracks and resleeved the counter bores for $1200 for me a few years back. The block was still very rusty inside so I got a nice combine block. I still had $800 in buying a used block, having the bores recut and the deck recut.
I got away cheap on my head too. It had Midwest's stamp of having been previously repaired by them. All it needed was surfacing and a quick touch up on the valves. As far as the 45D's PSB pump is concerned, is Dave Ferguson still repairing them? I remember seeing him take one apart and demonstrate how to properly repair and reassemble one at Hutchinson. Last I knew you could expect to spend at least $1K to fix one right.

It has power steering, but like something you've never seen before. Someone cut the braces on the front axle and repositioned them so they could install a hydraulic cylinder to the steering linkage on one side with a torque actuator welded into the other side. Works fairly well, but still some effort required. It is plumbed into the loader hydraulics which are run from the original loader pump (small) that is mounted above the generator and chain driven off the crank pulley....

Mine was done in 2005 and 2006 so this number is likely low. I have kept a spreadsheet of expenses on my projects, but only kept separate track of the engine on the 45D because it was so high compared to the others. $4,704.90 is what the engine alone came to, but when you start with $2,000 for block repair and $936 for an engine kit, it is at $3,000 before you even think about the head and fuel injection etc. Depending on the condition of the block and head the cost of the engine can vary considerably. I think it was the most fun of the ones I've worked on so far though.

But Tom, that 45Diesel of yours is sure a peach now!! That one certainly will turn heads, I guess the same can be said for Dave Fergusons 45 Diesel.
I wonder how much it was for him as he surely did almost all the work himself?

Dave Ferguson's is the nicest 45 Diesel I have ever seen. I think his block counterbores were done at Nevada, IA; I saw his block on the stand after the work had been done and it looked very nice.
I wonder if I would have pursued a WD45 Diesel if I had known ahead of time how much it would cost. I am glad I have it now and we use it regularly in our buckthorn/brush clearing at the farm.

You folks with WD45D's are a limited and fortunate group. If your's happens to be fully restored [ like TomMN's] then your even more blessed then the rest of us who do not own one. If I had the finances and room, etc, etc, I would love to own one. If one was available in fully restored [correctly] condition, it would be worth the asking price to be able to avoid the work [ although some here have time and consider there hobby to restore]. The WD45's G/D are considered one of AC's best workhorses, as we all can attest to.

I am right in the middle of of mine the parts are all taken out of the block ready to go to the machine shop.
I have 2 hair line cracks between 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 cylinders. I got the new cam bearings already for the machine shop to put in.

are the hair line cracks in the top of the block a problem i have gas motors with crack between cylinders at top no problem bottom of sleeve is a problem i understand the diesel has alot more compresion but those cracks are in the water jacket, the stand off is more important

.if you are going to do it right,just as if you were flying the damn thing.cris ia right on the aspects of it all. 1.pump and injectors will run as much as 2000.00 2 gasket set about 175-200 dollars.sleeves ,pistons about 1400-1500 for a good set.the head is a toss up.if you have a good one you can come out about 500-700 dollars.the last one i did was 975.00,.had new valves,4 new seats and all new guides.the filters are about 75.00 for all.3 main and rod bearings were about 300.00.what else you have to think about is the clutch and fly wheel repair. had the crank ground 10/10 ,275.00.just hope you dont have any flat lobes on your camshaft.about 90-100 dollars per lobe to get it repaired.if you do the work your self,and there is no reason you cant,if you can read,you will save a bunch of money and you will know the job is done right.....
