Looks like an orchard model. John Deere didn't make many orchard models in the 30 and 40 series. Green guy pay good money for that tractor. My neighbor has 2 4230 orchard models and has had guys call from all over trying to buy them. He still farms with them.

I don't know but if it is rare and runs I say let someone else own it and buy a couple of orange ones to keep that 170 company. Best looking part of the photo if you ask me.

Looks like a self modded cab removal and lowered with smaller tires.  Note the operators station and small fenders.

It looks like the 4post canopy was removed. I don't see anything rare about it. Most 4040s had 34 inch rear tires.

Maybe the fact that it is staring the Allis 170 in the face and not budging? Most of them would have 'run' off by now. LOL LOL LOL

What makes most of the John Deere's rare is the ability to type the word (RARE) when advertising it.

So you asked a question with the answer being about the transmission but the one photo you showed didn't show the shifter. That is typical jd.
They must have been really good if they only made 400 of them I think that would make it something I really wouldn't want a tractor so bad even jd stopped making them.

dan i was really just showing the tractor. i didnt expect anyone to know anything about it.

and they built the powershift from maybe 64?? to i think 92 so there wasnt just 400 built.
there was 400 of this combination built

what makes it odd is the combination of being a fender tractor and powershift

Well it does look pretty for a green tractor and it has a normal motor not that shake you off the tractor motor so it is probably a good ride if you can afford to fix it when it breaks...

My uncle bought a 4040 new in I think 81 or 82. 4post quad range. It was his big tractor for many years, til he got the 4430 with a cab. After that he wondered how he got along without the cab in the winter. Raised 11 kids on 200 acres milking 70-80 head.

A 4040 is nothing but a 4230 with the screw turned back so it only makes 90HP and different stickers on the hood.  It has the same 404 engine, same Roosa Master injecton pump and everything.

Not exactly the same Roosa pump as a 4230, but yes, it is very similar, only a few different parts, and about 4cc fuel difference. A 4040 is a neat little tractor, and the one you have here is a pretty cool combination, fender tractor with PS. I like it! I put quite a few hours on a 4040 years ago, but it was a cab/quad range tractor.

So does it have the 8 or 12 speed power shift? Basically an updated 4020. I think it'll make a nice tractor for you. It's hard to knock that 404 engine and powershift. Maybe not be the BEST or smoothest shift (Trying to keep from getting a virtual pitchfork in the gut) but a nice all around tractor.

What size tires are on the back? They look small. Like 28's that the Allis's had??? LOL

PS at lease when you push in the foot clutch the tractor stops, but the PTO doesn't AND you can put in it park and walk away.

Ok I'm dead....

power-shift on the 40 series is still 8 speed. The 15 speed came with the 50 series.

Let's see...Allis turbo-ed the D19, and they came out in 1961, so (add 30 years) John Deere should've came out with a turbo tractor around 1991. That makes this tractor too old for a factory turbo. Lol

That is...following the widely accepted theory John Deere has always been 30 years behind everyone else.

While Deere is always behind the 8 ball, the 4520 was their first turbo'd row crop farm tractor, and it was released in 69 I think.

About 1969 Deere came out with two turbo'd tractors, one with intercooler, and one without intercooler. I think 4320 without and 4620 with. I am hundreds of miles from my I&T manual that covers them.

4620 had an intercooler, not sure about a 4320. 4520 had no intercooler.

the 404 is such a monster it didn't NEED a turbo to make 90HP for a 4040

The 4520 came out in 69, straight turbo-charged. They had so many problems with them that shortly after, the 4520 was replaced with the 4620 with an intercooler, and slightly more hp, and the 4320 was released then too straight turbo-charged, and slightly less hp than the 45. 45 & 46 were available with power-shift, the 43 was not.
