    Posted: 16 Jun 2019 at 6:58pm
My D17 series 1 started to get noisy in the transmission. I never thought to check the fluid. Fortunately I did not use it much since then. I asked a mechanic and he told me to check the fluid. Sure enough, it was way down.

According to what I read, it holds 6 gallons. I only drained out two gallons, by removing two plugs. I can only hope I did not damage anything inside the trans.

I have noticed oil on the ground below the PTO shaft since I got the tractor 3 years ago. So thats where it leaked out. I bought new seal and O-ring. Plan to install that now that the lube is drained.

I do not see any metal chunks in the old lube. Its black, but not milky from water. So I dont think I did any damage. (And it moves ok).

The Agco dealer who sold me the seal, said their book recommends a certain type of hydraulic fluid, but they do not sell it.

I began reading online forums and watched some videos. It seems everyone has an opinion of what to fill the trans with. Some say "Universal Hydraulic Fluid". Others say to use 80W90 gear lube. And it seems that more of them suggest the gear lube.

What should I use? The stuff I drained looked more like the thick 80W90 gear lube. But I'm no expert on this stuff. Personally, I always thought gear lube was used in all manual transmissions.....

Please let me know!!!!

I also found some saying there are three drain plugs. I only found two. 1. On pan above drawbar toward rear of tractor. 2. On left side (sitting in seat), roughly below the clutch pedal. Both are 1-1/8 socket. If there is a 3rd one, I cant find it. (This is a SERIES 1).

THANKS.

The transmission/differential is the drain plug directly under the seat and when the tractor was new, used 80/90w gear lube. You fill it to the RIGHT of the gearshift and I think 6 gall is about right. You can also use modern day Universal hydraulic fluid. Interesting the AGCO man was clueless on the oil because I'll bet he had PERMA-TRAN oil in stock !!   The drain plug under the clutch pedal is for the Power Director clutch and PTO gears. It takes 2 gallons or so and should be a modern day Universal Hydraulic fluid. FILL IT TO THE LEFT OF THE GEARSHIFT. The hydraulic drain plug is under the belly directly down from the dipstick ahead of the hand clutch under the fuel tank. Takes 2 1/2 gal of Universal hyd fluid. looks to me like you need 11 gallons of Universal Hyd fluid or..... 5 gallons of Uni hyd fluid and 6 gal of 80/90w.  THREE DRAIN PLUGS.....THREE DIPSTICKS AND FILL PORTS.

Fill everything with Universal Tractor Fluid and be done with it.. You can buy GENERIC at the local Farm Store, or even Wal Mart.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I just rebuilt my D17 trans this spring. I used the 821 spec oil in it.

Since the 1960's the oil used in tractor drivelines and hydraulic systems have been identified like this:   303 oil...…..821 oil...….821XL oil......Perma-Tran oil...… Deere HyGard……...IH  HyTran…….there are many others besides these.

Thanks for all the help. So far so good. But now that I removed both the transmission plug and the Power Director Clutch drain plugs, I also have to refill that power director fluid. Since posting this I got an owners manual. It helps but is not as helpful as I expected.

In that manual there is a picture. It shows an arrow for Power Director Clutch filler on top of housing and it looks like its under the dashboard. NO SUCH COOKIE. All I can find is 1/2 inch pipe plug on the side of the cast housing BELOW the floor. Nearly straight down from the gas sediment bowl. IS THAT IT?

If thats it, what is the trick to get 2 gallons of Hydraulic fluid in there? No, I dont have pumps or anything like that. Those quart size 80W90 bottles with pointed spout come to mind, but that will take a long time. I plan to also check the Final Drive lube and will need those bottles for that if I need to add lube.

Finally, is there some sort of special funnel to fill the transmission? Allis sure made that filler hole too small..... How hard is it to remove the steering wheel? With that gone, I think it will be easier to fill.

It would be real useful if someone posted photos with arrows showing all the fill and drain plugs for the lubes. There are a lot more of them on this D17 than on my old Farmall M.

Folks,
Thanks Dr Allis and Steve. I am ready to refill my off topic WD45 and I think I will go with the Hydraulic fluid in hydraulic and transmission and rear end compartments. Seems like a good choice.

Horse farm,
I have changed all the fluids in my D17 series 1 and it wasnt too bad. You might find a container with a pouring spout/ neck to use.
Regards,

The tranny in my 220 is a carbon copy of my 45 only bigger. That whole thing uses 821,trans,bull gears, ring and pinion and the hydraulic pump sucks fluid out of the bottom of it all. I figure if the 220 can live on trans/wet brake oil,the 45 can too.

Wal Mart and others will sell a 18 inch long funnel that is only 4-5 inches in diameter for reaching LONG areas.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Since it takes about 6 gallons in the trans, buy it by the 5 gal pail and get a bucket pump. I've seen them at Northern Tool and Harbor Freight. Makes filling things a bunch easier/cleaner.

HORSEFARM...…..the fill port/dipstick for the Power Director compartment is NOT underneath the gas tank. It is within 3 inches of the gearshift to the LEFT of the gearshift. The book you have is pretty bad if it can't even show where this is located.

The book I have is a copy of the original series 1`owners manual. There is only one drawing with arrows that show the general vicinity of things, but thats it. Its not the most useful.

Let me be even more specific. The dipstick/fill hole for the Power Director clutch (and PTO gears) is located thus: #1. Immediately behind but up next to the instrument panel at the left corner. #2. Immediately forward of the transmission shift cover down in a shallow valley. #3. It has a hex head on it that requires a wrench (3/4" ? or maybe 7/8" ?). #4. It is right at the place where you could split the tractor in two for service work.   I don't know how much better to describe it than that.  IT DOES NOT LOOK AT ALL LIKE THE OTHER TWO DIPSTICKS.
