I have a wc and a 45, the wc has a fresh 226 engine and the 45 has a fresh 241 engine.

I know I am going to have to run 38 wheels to be competitive, I know I will need more power to do this.

We pull division 2, 3 mph classes, I will run no higher than 4500lb.

Should I lower the gearing on either of these, or build a bigger engine?

What tractor would be better on what set up--gearing or hp?

I know I can get diesel gears for the 45, might be able to find a under drive Sherman for the wc.

From what I have seen, guys with big motors run higher gearing and seem to hook better even at 3 mph. But they also tend to speed and get dq.

What do you guys suggest?

If I run more motor, how much more do I need? I can build my own motor, not sure how many cubes needs?

Build you a 300 cid engine, stay with your gearing , you will have plenty of power to pull @1500 rpm's. I had an engine in ours around 310 cid that wouldnt give up in the 4 mph classes. We now run 4 and 6 mph classes with a few more cubes. WD45 Tractor...
C, WD45,WD puller, 185, 200, 7060 Red Belly, 7060 Black Belly,8010, and a R52 Gleaner, AND PROUD OF THEM!

I pull a WD45 (that was my Dad's tractor).

After saying that, if I was going to buy a tractor to build a puller, I would probably look for a WC.

The WC is lighter, so it automatically gives you a little more moveable weight. You may be able to make the 3000 lb. class. (I barely make the 3500 lb. class). You will be able to build a good set of wheelie bars and weight racks and leave them on. You won't have to add weight racks between classes.

On the WD45, most people end up deleting the hand clutch. On the WC, you won't have to bother with that.

I don't know if you are planning on pulling stock or enhanced, but by putting a 226 crankshaft, flat top 4 1/8" pistons, a carb and governor spring from a 170 and buying an aftermarket camshaft ground to the same specs as a (gas) 175 cam, you will be in the 55 - 60 hp. without spending much money. You will be able to run it all day without worrying about hurting it.

When building the motor "WF owner" was describing, get some Buda rods from a six cylinder WD45, D17 diesel, or a D19 gas or diesel. They have a smaller crankshaft journal than the 201 or 226. Have a machine shop offset grind the crank (not very expensive) to give you more stroke. With a little head and carburetor work this engine will easily give you 75 plus horsepower depending on RPMs

If you do Facebook I have a page. Beers & Gears Pulling team. I have pictures and some info on there about my builds.
I built two motors with the set up mentioned above. I run 2 unstyled WC and they have 45 cranks in the 201 block. WC flat top pistons and big carbs and custom cams. I have dynoed mine at 65HP on a JD dealership dyno. This is a great motor for the price. Runs great on any gas u want to use. And starts all the time. I start mine up in the middle of winter up here in WI just to let them run for a half hour or so and they start great.
We also run 3.5 mph classes and it is tough some times to make in work but the best part is you can always stay up to speed and keep your momentum up. This is why I would rather be able to go faster if I wanted to instead of being to slow.

yea.... they are strong but it takes all they got to run those bigger tires ;) Maybe ill see you around this summer. The WC I just finished and is painted is up for sale if you know anyone interested.
