 Topic: What Fails On An Intank Fuel Pump ?

Is it electrical connections ? Motor fail ? Impeller ( not sure how the pumps function  ) fail or something else ?? Thanks

if your talking about a car/ truck... It is the bushings on the end of the motor.. Bushing wears a little and rotor runs off center. When you stop, the rotor is laying aginst the windings ( no air gap) and will not start back up.... That is why if you SLAM the door or BUMP the truck, it will sometimes take off and run for a while... temporary fix.

The motor that is cooled by the gasoline bearings get loose. The shaft runs a little off and the armature sticks to the field magnets. If you get a car that's been run low on fuel the fuel pumps go out on a regular basis. If your going to change one out get the module instead of just the pump. Changing the pump only is a little Cheeper but you'll be doing it again soon.

Yes, I was asking about a "gas engine/fuel injected engine of NO brand in particular  . DD, you speak of a "shaft" (so did Steve), but what does the shaft "drive" ?? is it an impeller like a water pump or a different mechanism ?? Thanks to both of your replies and have a safe and happy New Year  !!

shaft / rotor = same thing... Just a vertical motor with a little pump/ check valve on the end of it.. bushing on each end of the motor... .. lubed and cooled by gasoline as Dave said.... the bushings / brushes , wear due to heat and runs off center.

i had a conversion van that the pipe inside the tank broke off away from the pump, pump still pumped, but it wasn't going into the tube that carries it to the engine. was a simple fix by the dealer, think it cost me around $60. to have fixed.

So long as liquid in the pump no BOOOM!!! Vapors are what burn or explode.

You can toss lit matches into a pail FULL of gasoline all day long..... just don't do that when 1/2 full !!!

I wouldn’t trust it on a dead calm day. Could very easily get a flash of the vapors over the bucket. It all makes sense, but conditions make the difference.
