You know,JC,,I never thought bout thet little piece of knowledge,,,,but when usin a mig welder,,when you do get a piece of sl*g it IS a molten piece of SOLID FIRE and takes a long time to stop burnin whatever it falls on. And,,,,and,,, when usin an arc welder,,you don't get those big gobs of molten fire ,,,,that is,,,unless you are puttin some big Gorillas on your weld project,,,,WinkWink ( which I like to do, so I don't forget how to,,,,)LOL

When my son was abut 3 yrs old I was torching the end of a 1" bolt and nut off and he walked in behind me barefoot and in shorts as it was a warm summer day. The wife was in the house with our 5 yr old and one week old daughters.
Well it had just fell on the shop floor and he walked in and stepped on it right it in the middle of his foot. The scream got my attention ! When I picked him up it had burned into his foot and stuck to it ! I knocked it off his foot and ran him into the wife who is an RN and she cleaned it up as she kept supplies for all my farming mishaps and in a few days she had it healing and he was on the run again. He is 44 now and still has the scar !

Joe, you probably already know about not wearing anything polyester or nylon when welding, right? wool or cotton is best. won't melt into your hide and stick tight...

We had an old blacksmith in Siren by the name of Panzer, he had thick calloused hands and loved to use his forge. Seen him reach into the forge many times and turn a piece of metal over in there, without any gloves... Asked him once, "don't you ever get burned?" He laughed and held out his huge hand and said "got to many callouses to feel that". His hands were really thick and dark. But in his old age when he was just in there a couple days a week, his hands were not thick as I had remembered them to be... and used his gloves when working in there. Stern Smile He wasn't tough like he use to be. He lived behind the shop. He died and stuff was sold and the lot got leveled. Now it is just a memory... Oh yea, he grew up in Dakotas and helped on the farms and got a truck with smithy tools and forge and went around making his pay... and then applied in MPLS  RR house repairing steam engines and locomotives and train cars and then retired from there and came up here and started his blacksmith shop. Egads, that shop disappeared back in the seventies, close to 45 years ago.
