 Topic: Weights and bracket questions

Browsing the net looking for ideas for my weight bracket. I see both weights on front and mounted on side of brackets. I was under the impression that as far forward as possible was the best for front weight. what are the reasons for mounting on the side? pros, cons, experience.
also, i see tons on other color weights on AC tractors, most IH and almost no one running AC weights. why? We have a pretty good stack of 7000 series front weights and i plan on making my brackets to use them unless there is something i dont know.

Not many AC weights around here to be found. I prefer Ford or Massey weights as they have a flat edge that makes mounting on a plate easier. AC weights have a notch in them that makes them sort of flop around unless you use thick metal. Clubs have limits on how far up. Some say 11' from rear axle to front most point, others like our says it has to be flush with front of tractor. I use the side mounts as I don't have enough room on the rear to mount all the weights.

The best ideas are: #1. always as far forward as allowed by rules.. #2. suitcase hang-on design #3. All the same type/style of weight, so you can move a front to the rear an vice-versa. I use 7000 series weights of the 62 and 90 pound designs, so I can change my front end weight by 30 pound increments as needed. I laugh at those who have one style of weight on the rear and a different kind on the front. How do you make last second changes with that set-up?? I seldom ever use a belly rack when pulling....always front and rear. 500 pound class increase usually gets one 90 pound on the front and the rest on the rear with the 11 ft rule. Sometimes 120 instead of 90 , but it depends on the dirt.

I have seen people question front weights with the 11 ft rule. The put on a shallow weight when they get tech checked and then hang on a bigger weight when they pull to get that extra few inches. If you build the bracket out to 11ft and then hang the all the weights off the side there's never a question.
I run only 7000 series weights. The only downside I see it that on a lot of racks they can still swing side to side. I built my racks for them and have never had a problem.

I run side brackets to fine tune my tractor we don't have to many 7000 weights here so i run 75# and 90# IH weights

thanks for the input guys. I was specifically talking about weights on front or sides of a front bracket im sorry if i wasnt clear on that. I plan to hang my weights on the front of the bracket so they dont exceed 11ft per Natpa rules, that way also reduces the length of bracket needed. Im running short on time and probably wont mess with a mid bracket for now as i have plenty to do.
I wondered if they AC weights were unpopular because of the design or just availability.

I always interpreted it as nothing past 11ft, not just the bracket, so that is how i was planning to build.

Maybe I should clarify what I said. Say you build your bracket so it's 10 feet from the center of the rear axle and then you hang a 12 inch weight off the front. Everything is fine. But then before you pull you take that weight off and hang one on there that 18 inches. Now your weight is 6 inches too far forward. Been there... Seen that.

any preferences on the seat belt or rod and speed clip retaining method?

I would think any Competitor in his class would call him on that. He must finish near the back of the field, so they don't bother him ??

Mine on the front is 11'. The weights hang on the sides of the bracket, so if I add any, it goes a little further back. Never any issues. I would like to lower the front bracket, so weights are closer to the ground. Seems like the leverage would be a little differnt being lower, and its easier to hang them on. I use all IH weights, 75 & 100 unless I go to the 55&6500, then I throw some Oliver weights underneath the belly, but fine tune with the oliver weights
