Out in my woods discarding my Halloween pumpkins for the deer to eat and came across this thistle looking plant that I haven’t noticed before.

Very flat and “viney”. 2 to 4 foot spread. Any ideas on what it is? Invasive weed or native plant to northern Iowa?

Using your picture and then going to google picture search - came up with a couple ideas of what it might be

Then here is another idea - thistle stalk as a edible plant after prepping it
