Joe, I hope i'm reading the article right. The caption at the top of the video stated that the gentleman that owned the plane bought it in 2000 and painted it to look like it's namesake. I know it was built in 1944, but maybe it was a "tribute" plane, and not the original. I'm not really in the know on this, just maybe hoping that we didn't lose the real piece of history.

I didn't do it! It was a short, fat, tall, skinny guy that looked like me!

That does really suck. I am a fan of the B17 and the B29. How many flying B17s are left?? To think about the aircrews that fought for our freedom with the odds totally against them until the P-51 could support the crews. It really hardens my heart to think todays generation will NEVER remember this great generation for what they did for our freedom. They are all being lost in great numbers every day.

Is that the plane that travels to different airports?
One was in Schenectady a few years ago putting on a little show. I saw it fly over really low. What a sight. |

It's sad to see one go down but at least the occupants got out ok. 20 years ago there was a plane that landed on Greenland and was covered with snow for 40 plus years. A group of guys dug it out and almost got it flying before the APU caught fire and burned up the plane.

The plane that Jack(Ky) is referring to is the "Glacier Girl", a P-38 that went down on a remote ice cap in Greenland along with 5 other P-38s and two B-17s in 1942. They recovered the one P-38 and brought it back to flying condition and it is housed at Middlesburg. The other plane that JohnCO is referring to is the "Kee Bird", a B-29 that was forced to ditch on a frozen lake in Greenland in 1947. An attempt was made to recover it, but as mentioned, it caught fire and burned. I watched a documentary on it and couldn't believe it. I love to see the old planes flying and it is definitely sad to see one lost. Take Care, Rick W. |

My Dad flew both B-17's and P-38's. He said the P-38 was his favorite of the 37 types of planes he had ever flown. It is sad to see this piece of history gone. A few years ago, my brothers and I wanted to buy Dad a ride in the Liberty Bell when it was in Cincinnati, as we thought it would be neat to see him in it. Dad said no, as there was no way he was going to pay money to ride in a plane that they used to pay him to fly.
I believe that there is only 1 remaining B-29 that flys on a regular basis.

My understanding is there are about 12 of these planes left that are flight ready. If they want to keep them for future generations then they need to stop flying them before they are all gone IMHO.

So sorry to see some of our history vanish. There are so few left.We just had an air show here in Ocean City, MD. Mainly newer military jets. I was really srprised to see the B-2 Stealth Bomber fly by. We do not have a lot of them.
Good Luck! Bill Long

It"s on here because a lot of us served in the military and remember what made this country great before we collectively decided to give it away.

I am in Illinois not far from where this planewent down. A friend of mine has an avenger warbird that he flies and hangers around Aurora. This plane was an original. It is a shame, there are just so few of these that are left to have one crash and burn is just sad. Most of the warplanes are not insured and when they go down it is a total loss. Luckily no one was hurt. |

The plane landed in a corn field in Illinoise after a fore broke out somewhere on board. Fire trucks couldnt get to it in time to save it. Wanted to land where it took off from but couldnt make it back. How do you spell Illinoise? Fred
