Take your Battery off and removed the Oval Cover below it. You'll see the hand clutch in thier with the clutch released you should have .030" Gap. If more remove the shims between the pressure plate and back untill you reach .030" and put back together. thier will be 3 sets of two bolts each. put the shims you remove behind the presure plate. If you drop parts you'll ned to drain the PTO housing and remove it to get them back, so don't drop the parts. I have been succesful using a magnet some times.

The facings on the 3 disc's may be worn-out, Most advise is to re-shim the unit, but what if the clutch disc's themselves are shot??

Jim,
Good luck and not dropping anything in there. While you guys are on clutches, my 1950 WD makes a ticking or rythmic sound form the clutch area. As far as I know, my hand clutch does not slip, and my foot clutch does not slip. But today I was trying to plow and I could hear a noise in the clutch area, both while I am going and while the tractor is idling in neutral. Any ideas guys? Thanks Pastor Mike in Iowa |

remove the square plate from the bottom of the bell.check the throw out arms for wear also ck the throwout bearing for excessive wear of the bearing race with a long thin blade screwdriver excessive wear on the inner bearing will show up doing this.next crank her up and listen at the open plate if it is the foot clutch you will definitly hear it.i had the same problem on my 45-D.ended up replacing the pressure plate and throwuot bearing.does the hand clutch have a positive snap when engaged and disengaged ?? |

Thanks for the ideas. I will do it when I get a chance. Yes the hand clutch has a good snap to it yet. Pastor Mike |

I bought a new to me WD 45 had a light clunking sound coming from the transmition. It would stop when I pushed the hand clutch in. When I took it apart I found 2 nuts shaved down to 1/2 thickness in the bottom of the Hand clutch housing. and one lock plate. I drained and removed the PTO housing. I got enough ground up steel to be the third missing nut. I cleand out and replaced the nuts and lock plates . Its now smoth as can be. |
