Well,
I had the WD45 in the shop, so I decided to change the trans fluid. We pulled the plug on the bottom of the PTO housing and a steel ball came out (about 5/16" diameter). The bearing looks pretty beat up too. That can't be good! What do you think this would be from?

Also, do you guys run regular 80-90 gear oil in the trans?

One more - On the final drives, how often should I pull the pans and change the fluid, or is there a drain plug i am not seeing. All I can see is the plug on the side.

Thanks

Reed

I would guess that the ball is from the shift rails. Sometime in the past someone was probably working on the shifter and one of the detent balls fell into the shifter housing and later fell into the transmission. It may have been replaced in the shift tower.

I'd guess the ball came from a clutch shaft brg if it came out of the PTO box. You should be able to remove battery box and hand clutch cover and see the rear brg and count the balls and remove belt pulley plug to see the front brg condition.

Pulling the Pto Drain will not drain your transmition. its for your clutch housing and PTO. the Transmition drain is much further back. Pull your battery and clutch cover and you can see down in there. you can access the rest off the housing thru the HYD pump hole.

You don't have any "friends" trying to mess with your mind do you?  That would be a really bad practical joke.

There are 3 drain plugs that need to be removed to drain all of the tranny, differential fluid. I drained everything years ago and put hytran fluid in the rearend, tranny and hydraulics. If it's good enough for new tractors it will work for the old. Been running hytran for almost 30 years now. I would still use gear oil in the finals if you take them off to clean.

I did drain all three plugs, found the rear two to be normal.

I will check the tower, etc out. Thanks for the replies.

BTW, is the hytran fluid you are talking about the same as "Universal Tractor Fluid"?

I believe all the shift rail balls are 3/8" diameter, so if yours really is 5/16" that ain't it.

Ky, the owners manual was printed 50 years ago. I don't think they had Universal Hydraulic fluid back then.

Was the pto engaging and dis-engaging properly? There are two ball bearings and a spring between them running through the shaft in the drop box that keep the gear that slides on the shaft engauged or disengaged.
What agco told me to use on the fluid was permatran 821xl on the hydraulics and hand clutch. For the transmission (shift tower/ rear end) 90wt gear oil. But that is just what agco said to use, I'm pretty shure they didn't have permatran in 1955. I bet the universal fluid would work fine and probably save you a few bucks too.

You can put 80-90 in the tranny and hyd oil in the hand clutch/pto and it will all get mixed together. Hydraulic is seperate.

AC lube charts shows update to 821 Hyd fluid in all compartments. I like the idea Dr. has with the "blend", anyone currently running that mix??

So I took the inspection cover off over the hand clutch, and removed the shift tower. I can see the rear bearing that Dr Allis is talking about, but cant see if all the balls are there. I also couldn't see if there were balls missing on the shifter rails. (Too dark where i was, and it was getting late)

I mic'd the ball, it is actually a billionth smaller than 3/8", so it appears to be bigger than the shaft bearings.

If the trans shifts good, do i need to worry about it (the mystery ball bearing i found), figuring it is probably from a previous service on the shift tower?

One more question -- i have never been into the shift tower before, is this going to be a real pita to get back together?

Thanks

Reed
