Plentiful into the sixties, most around us were a rear mounted type because you had to mount and dismount them often unless you dedicated a tractor to one thru hay season. We had a nice AC one for the D17 and D14 but it was a job to mount up, used a big set of pivot pins instead of the snap coupler bell.
By the seventies most had been replaced by some sort of trailing combination mowing and conditioner setup around us, those took lots of HP. Still used the sickle bar once a year to mow straw stubble down for baling. Straw was already in high demand for landscape use. Edited by Rick of HopeIN - 06 Jul 2010 at 8:57pm |

Jeff, Clay is right, I used to have a WD type mower with a wooden pitman that lifted with a cylinder, can't remember the model & too lazy tonite to get Norm's book to look it up. I sold that when I got the 80R & never looked back, it is belt driven & will mow straight up, perfect for knocking down briars & small limbs around the woods. I only used it on the 45 once, the D17 has power steering so it got the mowing job. I will put it on the WD I got last Fall soon, that one has power steering too. Had a WD with a side mount mower one time but sent it back, did not get a stiff neck but the mower was always in the way & had too few tractors for it to be just a mowing tractor, & the wife had more control back then...Harvey

I had a JD that the adapter mounted after the drawbar was off, was a bear to mount, but the job it did was wonderful if kept sharp. Wish I'd never sold it.
