    Posted: 04 Oct 2010 at 12:42pm
I'm replacing - or trying to replace - the bushing at the front of the bracket which supports the pan seat on my WD45. Thus far I have not been able to budge the one that's in place. Here is a picture of the bracket - you can see the inner and outer shells separated by rubber.

I've thought about locating someone with a press - would that be workable? Or is there some trick to this that has eluded me thus far? Thanks for any suggestions!

Try with a press...take out the inside shell first and then using a hacksaw, cut a groove in the side of the outer shell. Carefull application of a cold chisel will loosen and allow the outer shell(and rubber if it doesn't come out with the inner shell) to drop out. I note some rusting which won't make the last step any easier but it should work

BTW, we change knifehead bushings on a regular basis on my 469 NH Haybine....same technique.

regards,

Ken, thanks for your suggestion! Sounds like a good approach....or perhaps I could drill out the inner shell. Yes, there's considerable rusting.....stuff surely makes things hard to move! I hope the new bushing goes in easier than the old one comes out!

I used a torch. My bolt would not come out. So I cut the ends off with the torch. the rubber burned out the inner sleeve fell out and I cut the outer sleave out with the torch. That was after wasting a whole day trying to remove with ever other toll known to man.

Heat and PB blaster go my bolt out. However, I have not tried to remove the entire bushing yet. Was satisfied with my bolt remove achievement, so I put it aside for a while. Mine has lots of rust as well, so I will be trying the methods above. Good luck.

Jeff, I was able to drive the bolt out - went hard - that turned out to be the easy part! I've used PB Blaster and a couple of similar products, heat, BMFH.......none of those come close. I will try above methods and report back after I return from my first trip to the antique car/truck/tractor(?) flea market in Hershey, PA. Leaving tomorrow at 0-Dark Hundred.

When i changed the bushing on mine i pushed the inside of the bushing out on the shop pres then got the rest out with a small cold chisel kept very sharp and a lot of light tapping with a small hammer Kev
