    Posted: 01 Jun 2012 at 2:06am

My recently purchased WD45 hydraulics are not working. It seems the the hold positioning valve & perhaps more is frozen up. I have ordered a service manual & hopefully it will show details on rebuilding if needed. The rear rams appear to be in great shape, no surface rust is evident. Which leads me to believe it hasn't been that long ago since it quit working. The guys I bought it from stated they didnt know much about it, they bought it & flipped it for a small profit.

I know absolutely nothing about tractors much less hydraulics. I am comfortable in my mechanical abilities, but this is much different than my 79 Bronco.

Where should I begin to trace the problem down? The most obvious issues that you all have ran into over the years.
Also the 3 point is currently in the up position, not sure if that makes a difference or not.
Hopefully sometime this weekend I am going to look at my buddies to see what all the linkage and control arms look like & how the are suppose to move.

thanks in advance
Joe

First get that manual so you can get the linkage all set right. What does it do? Is the rear hitch not lowering?  If not and all the linkage is set right then my first guess would be a broken spring in the pump jamming a spool. Springs are cheap but pump is a bit complicated. Everything that comes apart must go back in the exact same spot they came out of. The pump is hard to wrestle out from between the frame and torque tube but I've seen worse projects. Might as well have a pan of clean diesel fuel to lay the parts out in order as they come out of the pump. There's a couple threads from awhile back on what to do and what to look for but first would be that manual and set the linkage correctly. Good luck.

As stated get an owners manual and a service manual. Next check all the fluid levels; for this tractor: if it is gears use gear lube 80w90, if is hydraulics use any good brand of universal hydraulic fluid labeled for AC 821, if it is engine use any good brand of engine oil (I use mutli weight detergent oil, some use straight weight non-detergent oil, your choice), if it is radiator I use water from my rain barrel and older vehicle style anti freeze. Repost after you have done these things and we can all help you a lot more.

Have you stood on the lift arms with the hydro lever down? Most need weight to lower. The fluid must back feed through the pump to the reservoir. Drain the fluid from the reservoir and the bottom of the pump. If you take the plug out of the pump and no fluid comes out.stick a wire in the hole and see if there is sludge in the pump. These ol' tractors rarely seen much maintenance cause they just worked mostly flawless.  If you still have questions my email is open and I have rebuilt mine twice. Once for same problems you are having, second cause a cam follower broke and it sucked the metal fragments into the unloader valve. They have no filter and if its in the reservoir it gets in the pump.  Add few ppl change fluid and those that do forget the plug on the hydro pump and you eventually end up where you are now. Also note these are HIGH Pressure LOW volume pumps. Over 4000 psi but at a lower flow rate. In good shape they can and will blow the ends off cheep 3000 psi hydro cylinders.  Hope this helps  Tim from the rocking tjc

You better fully understand what you are doing and have all of the Personal Protection Equipment in place for what you will be doing anytime you work on equipment. I have attached a link to the effects of hydraulic fluid injuries on the human body. http://www.dennismac.co.uk/hands/hyd/index.html

What makes you believe the hydraulics are not working? The WD 45 has pressure one way only and if the lift arms are up, will need weight of some kind to lower them and the lever on the left side of the steering wheel has to be down. The fluid level is checked with the lift arms up by a dipstick on the left side of the torque tube below the battery box.
