    Posted: 01 May 2016 at 6:55pm
I just bought a wd45 last weekend got i home and parked it in the barn. I went out today to get some work done and i try to take it out of gear and the shifter is able to move in circles and cant even feel any gears. Im guessing the shifter broke but not sure. My question is how do i remove the shift tower? I ubolted it and tried to lift it but will only move about an inch. I just order a repair manual and should be here tomorrow, will the process be in there? If not any advice would be greatly appreciated. Are there any other places i can find info on this issue? I tried a couple of searches on here but came up with nothing.

Hi,
It may have broke, but it can also just come out of position and flop around too. That can happen due to worn parts. Just don't hear of many breaking off, they took a lot of abuse!  I remember one or both of the 45's were so worn that once in a while it would get stuck in two gears and Dad had to take the snap ring out under the rubber boot and pull the shift lever. Then get it back in neutral and then reinstall the shift lever. We had to shift them with both hands sometimes to get them to go into gear from worn shift lever issues.
I assume you have removed the steering support bracket on the right side of the tower?
And removed the battery box? and possibly the left foot rest? After that the tower should lift straight up.
Couple pictures might help us help you.
BTW congratulations on the new tractor. My guess is its a girl!:)
Regards,
 Chris

I did remove everthing you stated. When i lift it up it looks like there is a hook of some sort that goes under the gearsthat is holding it up. I will to remove the snap ring tomorrow to and pull it out tomorrow to see if that is it. And also get some picture. Thanks for the advice and yes of course its a girl. Haha

Curtis,
It has been a day or two since I had my WD shift towers off. But I may have a picture or two to help you. Let me see what I can round up.

Shift tower off tractor

View into WD tranny with tower off ( I think this is the neutral position)

WD tower again

I guess I don't have any of the forks that hang down. I think there are two and something may be jammed and holding the forks from coming up?

Regards,
 Chris

reverse shift fork gets in the way and I think you have to tip it sideways some to get it up and out. Also seems like it goes in easier when gears and lever are in 2nd gear position when going back in.That may not be the right combo but there is something like that about it. Been TOO MANY years since I dun it.

Its most likely slipped out of position. Mine does it so often that I haven't reinstalled the snap ring. Take the shifter out and look down the tower, all 3 pieces you see should be in line. That will put you in neutral. Put the shifter back in and shift carefully. A large screwdriver or pry bar can help align it.

Shift cover is almost impossible to get off in 1-3-4-r. Natural or 2nd. No need to remove top for your problem .     MACK

take the stick out and get a screw driver in there and move the rails around til they all line up put the stick back in and allways make sure that you make square corners when you shift

I would do this first before trying to get the whole tower off. Once you get it working again shift ONLY in the squared H pattern. Do not try to shift at an angle like from 1st to reverse. I would imagine the ball on the end of the shifter is wore and needs welded up.
Somewhere on this forum is a drawing of the ball with measurements for building it back up.

Got the shifter out and the end was worn down. I got everything lined up and put back together. It felt good till i tried to put it in gear and it happened again. So i did the process over again this time i noticed the pieces that make up the square where separated. Im assuming that this is the problem. Is this something that can be fixed or should i source a new tower? Is it something i could have done when i took the tower off? I was wanting some imput before i tore into it. Here are some picture that i got. I hope you can see it ok. Thanks in advance.

In the top picture you can see all the forks lined up in neutral. Then in the next two you can see the forks lined up but a gap between them.

That gap is big enough for the end of the shifter to fit through.

I welded up my shift lever end and fitted to the what slid nice through the gates down there. and the other thing I did was took that square headed pin out, took a long drill bit that was the size of the pin and drilled a second hole in tower on the opposite side. cut a slot into the ball of the shifter and used to pins to keep it aligned instead of just the one. Hasn't jumped out since.

When all 3 forks are lined up to neutral, there should be no way the ball can get out of the slot. I circled the top of the forks where the "slot" is formed when they are all lined up.

So what is wrong with it if the forks can slide right and left and a gap can be formed when it is in neutral between the forks?

Doesn't look like you got the tower off yet. And if you didn't then something needs attention in there. I cant tell from the pictures if its in neutral or not? But at some point you should be able to pull the tower and evaluate the amount of wear or it something is broken. I would move the forks around till you can get the tower to come off. It should come up and off with not much force if any. Hope that helps a little??
Keep in mind that these are old machines and that shifter is one of the most used parts on the tractor. It could be worn out.

I can't tell from the pics, but it looks to me like there is an ear missing on one fork, or it's not in neutral?????? When in neutral, the ball should be contained in a rectangle formed by the 3 slots in the forks.

I have a similar issue I got advise from Doc that my issue could be oil. We top it off this morning and the tractor went ahead a bit and the wheels locked up we took the shifter arm out and realigned them so they were in neutral and notice when we shifted in reverse the other shifter moved. We can get to move in reverse but as soon as we shift into first the reverse move and the wheels lock up
