 Topic: WD-45 Diesel OIl Filters

Can someone clarify the types of oil filters used on the Buda diesel WD-45, as shown in the picture? I see some with regular modern looking spin-ons and some with these, which also appear to be spin-ons... but a vintage type. Is this the type of filters used all through the WD-45 diesel era or are there variations. This is on a 1955 WD-45D and a spin on filter seems quite advanced for that era.

Not like modern spin on but yes it does screw on. Most things back then used a canister which held the element.

Mainly wondering if this was the setup on the diesel WD-45 from day one to the end of production or if it appeared later?
Also, if it was a "first" or near to a first for a "spin-on" oil filter? From pictures I can access, it looks like it was a feature from day one but I have a couple of conflicting sources (not primary ones) that claim "spin-on" oil filters did not appear until 1957 tractors. Judging from pictures alone, that statement may be based on A-C tractors other than the WD-45D. My in house sources don't clarify this.
A spin-on filter seems a big deal to me in this era and forward thinking.

Maybe should think about design of the filters... and what classifies them as such. There are filter cartridges and spin-ons and spin-ons with rolled threads... Yea, you got a filter with very coarse threads on it, but a typical spin-on will have threads like pipe thread and the filtration is usually full flow where-as, the filter the WC-WD - WD-45 Diesel etc. had were by-pass filtration. The early D17 Diesel had a CLM filter. CLM stood for Cartridge Lube Metal canister style filter... and that was full flow. The A, B, C, CA, G, RC, WC, WD, WD-45, D-10, D12, D14, D15, D17 (early) used a filter listed as a SMRTH filter. Spin-on Male Rolled Threads and were used in bypass systems.

My 34 UC uses the same filter. They've been around a while....

Just to think, the companies went from a canister/ metal/paper cartridge element to a spin on filter and now they are going back to the cartridge style filter made of plastic so they can be squished after use to get the oil out and then can be burned completely and not have them tossed into landfills.

JC,there is a company in Easton IL that collects used filters and shreds them and recycles the media and metal. Has been a profitable venture.
