I was wondering if someone would tell me is there any difference internally or externally between a WC engine and an early WD (short head) engine?

I believe that change happened in 1935, went from 2" to 2 3/8".

Aside from the really early blocks that you most likely will not encounter that had the smaller mains, the earlier WC blocks did not use as many head bolts as later WC/WD/WD45 blocks. Not sure when A-C changed the head bolt count but think it was some time after 1940. You can still put a later head on one of these earlier blocks. Externally all WC/WD blocks look the same. Kip

I would suspect if you tore down a 1948 model WC engine, it would be nearly identical to a 1948 WD engine except for the governor spring. Compression ratios should have been the same by then for gasoline models.

My dealers parts book showed around 6 different compression ratio option pistons for the WC
