Someone here mentioned a WD boom. Does anyone have a sketch or drawing to make a unit? Also what would be it's lift capacity at say 8ft. behind the rear tires(Approx 10 ft behind rockshaft). I'm looking to be able to lift 1000# at that point. Thanks - AL

Al,
I mentioned I was looking for one also or the plans to make one. There's a picture of on on a CA in Norm's book but it doens't look it would work on a WD. It also mentions the WD version as having more lift capacity at 1,400 lbs. and cost $43.50 while the CA version would lift 650 lbs. and cost $25.75. |

I have the plans to build it. 10 ft out from rockshaft is NG. That boom on the WD/WD45 is at best out 5 ft from rockshaft. It will lift pretty good [depending on hyd's up to snuff] but it has it's limits. The 10 ft out would be a unsafe lift, along with stress on all the hardware. I guess if the load at 10 ft was small it may be OK.

1-1/4 rams at 3000# for a total of 7500#. - AL

It has been a while, but I think this is how you look at forces in this situation -
7,500 pounds of force from the cylinders times the roughly 9 inches from the short arm of the rock shaft to the center of the rock shaft would be 5,625 ft-lbs of torque on the rock shaft. A 1,000 pound load at 10 ft would be 10,000 ft-lbs of force in the opposite direction - the 1,000 pound load wins.
I hope I thought that through correctly, if not, I'm sure someone will chime in.

Adam, I don't think it matters if your numbers are exact, it gets the point across. The next thing to think about is how fast this boom will come down when you bump the lever a bit. It is not a snap couple boom. It is only hooked to the lift arms. If they come down too fast at 2 feet behind the pivot point, think how fast it would move at 10 feet back. It would be a blur.
I saw a cobbed up rear blade on a WD at a sale one time. It was mounted to the lift arms only. It raised way high like 5' off the ground. The guy shut the tractor of so the auctioneer could sell it and people started moving in toward the tractor about the same time the guy let the lever down a touch. That blade hit the ground in a fraction of a second. Luckily nobody got their foot under it. |

I had an AC scraper blade on my WD. The front wheels got broke off my IHC C 1/2 mile back from the shop. We hooked the front of the C to the back of the blade to bring it up to the shop. A friend had to ride the radiator of the WD to hold the front end down.

I can get some copy's made, they are "rough" but helpful to build-it. I built one and it was pretty easy work. Had welding shop make the bends in the 4" C-Channel.
