GM Folks,
I am NOT a gearhead so be gentle. I was using my WD to plow some snow and everything was going great, for a while... While plowing uphill, it just shut off on me. Trying to restart, it turns over but will not fire. I checked gas in the tank and there is plenty. I took the fuel line loose frpom buth the tank and carb and fuel runs out of both. Can someone please point me in the right direction to diagnose further? I am kinda short of good tractor people here in the Ozarks. Thanx, dan |

If it seemed like someone turned it off check the spark.

Check power to distributor and coil. Take distributor cap off and check points to see if they are opening and closing as you turn over engine. Should be a .020 gap when they are fully open. Maybe clean the points with small file or some emery cloth.

yes... most common failure would be the coil or the condenser = no spark.
this a distributor system ? .... is it 6v or 12v ? ... if 12v, is the coil an old 6v coil ? Edited by steve(ill) - 51 minutes ago at 9:06am |

And the ignition switch on my 49 WD (original) sometimes breaks contact and dies as if shut off....cause it is! You can pull a few wires off plugs and get cap off then remove rotor and plate over points. Put rotor back on and rotate engine to where when you twist rotor it opens closed points. At this point you pull coil wire out of cap and hold end close to block and twist rotor. You should have slight arcing at points and spark jumping to block with switch on. This is providing you have a distributor not a mag.

If no spark at coil run a jumper wire right from the battery to the coil. That will bypass the switch.
