On my 1953 curved stick WD, oil is leaking from between one of the manifold ports and the block (don't remember which one......near the center of the manifold). Tractor has started intermittently smoking. My question is can I buy individual parts (like valve seals) for the head or must I buy some type of kit and have the head rebuilt? Any recommended suppliers?..............O_O

Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

You could buy valve seals but I would dought it would work all that well.
My guess would be you have this problem. Two sets of seals didn't work for this fellow. |

Dick,,,so you're saying,,,head comes off,,,,send it to the machine shop for new guides and valves,,,a good lookin' over for any warping of the head?
Cause my 53 WD just like the one above started this same problem last week. But I'm thinking (start buying a whole engine overhaul kit and just do the whole engine) I saw here somewhere, where Dr Allis had an interesting way (and the parts for sale) to get some nice horse power out of the old WD engines!

Maybe. Mostlikely. The point I was trying to make was that valve seals would be a waist of time. IMHO
Aslo maybe not so humble. When you have oil seeping out around a [bad manifold gasket] you know that is not an intake valve because it would get burned and be smoke. So it would have be seeping/running down around an exhaust valve. If you can live with the oil spots on your glasses from the exhaust the leak could be stoped with a new manifold gasket. I would remove the head and have it repaired if it were mine. |

OK,,Thanks Dick,,that's what I'm thinking too,,only mine's not leaking around the manifold,it IS fowling a plug (#1 cylinder) and I'm getting white smoke when it idols.
#2 is carbon fowling, (unburnt gas) ,and what's even weirder to me is,,,#3 and #4 are clean as a whistle,,,, I would think if I had a carberator set too rich,,they'd all be carbon fowled?

If you don,t know the history of the tractor you can find some real head scratchers when you pull the head off. I bought a tractor that had a new sleeve kit that they did not do the head and gave up on the tractor because the couldn't get it to run. There has to be something about getting a head looked at that some are afraid of.
