I see a small divot into a couple of threads on a couple of the main bearing cap bolts in both of my WD blocks. Was there originally a piece of nylon or similar in this as a locking feature?
The AC manaul says "Tighten the main bearing capscrews to 35 foot pounds. Later tractors use special self locking capscrews and no lockwire or washers are needed." I am wondering if there was supposed to be a nylon insert that is now gone, then maybe I need to safety wire or use lock washers. |

Main cap bolt torque of 85 ft lbs not 35 ft lbs!!! No nylon insert ever used. DO NOT EVER USE A LOCK WASHER in an area of extreme importance !!! Lock washers sometimes BREAK and then you have nothing for torque. If you don't have a way to use lock wire, the threads are a self-locking design. If you're still worried, use some blue loctite.

Thanks DrAllis! Late last night when I posted I thought 35 seemed awfully low for those bolts and I was halfway to bed... My scanned copy of the service manual isn't great. Like to think I'd caught that when tightening them down and it was way to light, but you never know.
Good to know about the nylon inserts not being a thing. If the bolts turn in too easily I may put a dab of Loctite on. The little divot in the threads is interesting.

Do your nuts have that slotted lock on top? If so, but they aren't tight on the bolt anymore, you can set the nut on an anvil, put a small sock over the lock and give it a wack wiht a hammer. This will squeeze them in a little so they will lock better again.
