Last fall my WD came up lame. It was popping and sounded like it was missing too. We replaced the manifold gaskets but it didn't make any difference. Next we replaced the plugs and wires an it seemed worse. I couldn't find copper core wires locally but NAPA had a wire core set. Some kinda silver braided wire for the core. We started harvest and the WD went in the shed.

The other day we got around to her again and found the original manifold had a small hole in it. After replacing the manifold the popping was gone but the miss is still there.

Today when I pulled the plug wire completely off of cylinder 1, 2 or 3 it doesn't change the way the motor runs until you put it near the plug again and when it starts to throw an arc (about a 1/4" away) she smooths right out. It does the same thing with each plug. If I pull #4 the engine dies (it's the shortest wire). So I assume I need a new set of copper wires or is there something else wrong?

I think 295 plugs and solid core wires are required with a mag. If it's tossing an arc like you say i would not suspect the mag, except maybe timing. Try opening the gap on the plugs a little. When you pull the wire off the plug and force an arc at the plug cap, you are actually retarding the timing at that plug. Opening the gap on the plug also is retarding the timing some.
I believe "copper core" and "wire core" are the same thing. Just make sure NAPA didn't give you "carbon core" wires.....won't work with a mag

I am still confident of this;
I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Ps 27

Actually, by lifting the plug wire, you're increasing the amount of collapse time of the ignition coil's field prior to discharge, and the result, is a higher arc voltage... hence, the plugs were slightly fouled, and lifting the plug wires cleared the foul.

What I think is more likely, is that the manifold leak, over time, was affecting scavenging, hence manifold vacuum and mixture, and someone compensated by twiddling with the air/fuel ratio.  Now that you changed the manifold, vacuum is higher, and the mixture is either substantially richer (not re-adjusted yet), or substantially leaner (adjusted too far) hence, not firing.

Try leaning out the mixture a bit, then lifting the plug wires a tad 'till the cylinders fire... then re-land 'em and see if it resumes a clean-smooth run.  Also keep in mind that if you've got ethanol blends, a little gas-water, or a plugged air-bleed passageway, it'll do that stuff, too.

From what you're saying I should start by checking the plugs and regapping them. If that doesn't fix it, then try leaning out the fuel mix. I have a manual over at the shop but does anyone know what gap to set the plugs.

I couldn't get Autolight 295 plugs locally so I bought the plugs at AGCO and they just have a part# on them. Could the wrong heat range plugs be the problem?
