Am working on getting my '48 WD all put together. I bought it earlier this year from another forum member to replace my '51 WD with a bad engine. Have been using parts off the '51 to get the '48 going. Have two hydraulic problems:
1. Just below the hydraulic oil dipstick there is a large (3/4" diameter) drilled hole. This will leak hydraulic fluid like crazy. Just weld a plate over it? Was this maybe for some implement oil return line or something? It doesn't appear to be threaded.
2. I can't get the hydraulics to work properly. Several related problems here - the connecting point for the vertical rod that controls the hydraulic pump/valve hits the bottom of the fuel tank. The '51 has a recess in the bottom of the fuel tank for this. The hitting only allows the control lever (at steering wheel) to move 1/2 way up. Also, I have disconnected the vertical lever to be able to fully move the pump/valve. I have made the adjustments for 'hold position'. All adjustments were there except for 'screw B' to lock the plates together. After starting the tractor the rear arms come all the way up, and won't go back down. Pump/valve position has no effect. Bad valve? Any way I can test this?
Trying to get this ready to move snow - have a loader on the '51 that I'm going to put on the '48, but no point in doing that until I can get the hydraulics to work.
Thanks in advance for any help/ideas.

The short rod is connected, but the long one is not, because I can not make it move fully with the lever behind the steering wheel (hitting the gas tank thing). I'm moving the long rod manually while standing by the tractor to test.

Do you have the operating manual, it covers the adjustments, and some good pics?
If not I can email it, it is in Adobe.

Got it mostly figured out. The 'A' screw was locked down, but not in the correct orientation. Still have the problem with the lever hitting the bottom of the fuel tank. May swap tanks from my '51 that has the divot in the bottom to clear this lever. Right now the hydraulic control lever only moves from horizontal to about 45 deg. By adjusting within this window you can't get very much speed to the hydraulics. At least now I know the hydraulic pump and valve function.
