1948 WD.
I need to remove the left final drive housing to replace a broken stud.
Can I do it with out pulling the shaft, pinion. Why does the book say to remove the brake shoes?
Then I can get the broken stud out and reassamble?

Thanks

Gary,
Are you talking a stud in the rear end housing or the outer housing that contains the bull gear?

The final drive shaft runs through the brakes to the diff and the brake drum is pressed on the shaft. So to remove the final drive housing the shaft and drum will need to come off with housing and through the brakes and the drum is surrounded by the brake shoes. That's the reason brakes need to come out first. Hope this helps.
Good luck getting the brake pins out.

Jeff
It is the outer housing, that covers the bull gear.

Well, from what I have read and those I have spoke to here, it will all have to come off. I am in the process of doing some final drive work on my WD45. To access that section, or to split at that section, of the final, the entire unit needs to come off the tractor. The pinion shaft comes out from the outer cover, to do that the brakes need to come off...to get the drum off, it all has to come off the tractor. You see where this is going. I am no expert, and at this point have only removed the bull gear and axle. Think I got luck, the upper bearings seem good. The inner and out axle bearings on mine were bad. Sure others will chime in with more hands on experience. Hip that helps. You have a manual?

I have the manual. Just didn't want to do more than I had.
I think I will wait on getting in to it till after I return from Kansas, going up to see my son for the 4th.  Will open it up after I get back.
Thanks for the input..
