 Topic: wd crankshaft oil seals ..felt ones

trying to install those felt oil seals that come with the oil pan gasket set,,how do you get in the small grrove on the cam shaft rear cap?

have tried that but neoprene between the 2 felt seals keeps slipping apart...I guess i'll try too pinch together and work from one end to the other...thanks

Take the upper seal holder off and glue the seal in. Same with main cap, glue it in or they will turn and leak. MACK

put the seal between 2 pieces of wood and put in vise for an hour or so. they will smash very nicely once in the crank jounal they will swell back nicely. i soaked mine in oil before vising wworked great

Like Gman said, soak and clamp, but I put mine in the freezer overnight while clamped, kept them flat long enough to work with them for quite a while

I would say if the felt separates from the center neoprene, the seal is junk. Get a new one, soak it for a day in oil, clamp both halves in between 2 pieces of plywood, and put in the freezer overnight. Next day insert seals in bearing cap and top retainer and assemble. If you are overhauling, make sure your clearances are right in the mains before you put the seals in. DO NOT trim the seal down to fit, it will fit and seal they way it is made.
