Two questions that I can't find have been asked before:
1. Did the WD and WD-45 use the same size sediment bowl? (I don't want to assume...) 2. What is the correct height of sediment bowl? Most aftermarket vendors now sell "short" and "tall" bowls. Both will fit. My WD owner's manual seems to show a short bowl. I don't think I've seen an original fuel strainer assembly that survived since they tend to leak and get replaced over the decades. I'm guessing some of you guys on here have seen them before and would know for sure.

. I've seen more tall bowls on farmalls. If you have a rusty fuel tank then use a tall bowl. Or if refurbishing a working tractor vs chasing a museum factory stock tractor the tall bowl can give future protection. .

Fairly certain it's a short bowl. Both my WDs and the WD-45 I worked on had 'em.
From my WD: From my cousin's WD-45 (same bowl): |

I think the aluminum bowl was used with a mounted corn picker so as to reduce the chance of the bowl getting broken and causing a fire. Am I right?

I don't remember fires being common back in the old days. We did have a fire extinguisher on the picker (snapper as the red & green folks called it) but then again, nothing was plastic.

As the guys said, short bowl was normal. The Taller bowls hold a little more fuel and also trash in the fuel. Having a taller or "deeper" bowl helps keep trash farther away from the inlet in my opinion. Totally optional.... Steve@B&B

Yes, you are right about the aluminum bowl, I still have that although I have replaced it with the original short glass bowl, but I remember my father and uncle(they owned the tractor) commenting that the dealer had come out to replace the glass bowl(such service!) with that bowl because of the danger of fire on the 170 with mounted picker.
