    Posted: 06 Feb 2010 at 10:46pm
OK, this may have been covered before but I am considering trying to adapt a power steering pump and gearbox from a '70s era Chevy pick-up to my WD-45. Has anyone here tried this before? Yeah, I've probably lost my mind, but I still think I am going to try it, mostly so I can remove the origional gearbox to allow room for a crank driven pump and reservoir. Any commenta on first-hand experiance would be most welcome.

I did it to a WD45 with a swartz wide front, it originally steered very hard, removed the boltster and inserted a power steering from a truck, after rebracing it several times the only problem I had was it would not turn as sharp as I wanted. But boy did it turn easy.

What was the power steering unit off of? What I mean is Ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc. I thought it looked like the pitman arm would have to be lengthened to allow for sharp turns. Did you have problems finding room for the pump? Thanks.

If I remember the pump and sector was off of a chevy truck. Lots of room for the sector but the pump had to be mounted beside the motor instead of on the top of the water pump, under the hood. You are also right, to get it to turn better the are would have to be lengthed. That has been several years ago, heck sometimes I can't remember what I ate for breakfast. Good Luck
