 Topic: WD 45 OIL FILTER HAS WOODEN ROD???

Was going to change the oil and filter in my 45 today, BUT when I got the filter off (NAPA;WIX 1101) it had a wooden dial rod in the filter, and had no tube in the filter base. Can anyone explain this? According to what I can find out it should have a wix 57011, napa 7011, or a baldwin T300M filter, all of which are wix filters with different paint jobs my baldwin filter you can see the wix numbers under the red paint. Was this a common practice? Should I put the wooden rod in the new (7011) filter? Please help!! Thanks Matt

The wooden dowel is put in there by the manufacturer of the filter. There is supposed to be a long metal tube stuck in the oil filter housing on the engine. When you put the filter on, you're supposed to remove the dowel so the tube you're missing goes in the hole. Essentially you have an unused filter since the oil was able to bypass the filtering media. You need to find another metal tube.

So in other words the oil in this engine hasn't been filter since who knows when. Where could I find one? would a standard fuel,oil, or brake line cut to the right length work, or is there something speacial about it??? Matt

The good thing is you can reuse the filter that was on the tractor cause it is still clean inside. Well I know I saved a drawing somebody put on here once, but I can't find it in my tractor stuff file. The tube has to fit snugly in the center hole of the filter housing. It had the top rolled in so as to make a radius to push up in the filter packing but wasn't rolled shut. It also had a small cross hole very near the top. Length matters too, cause if it is too long and pushed all the way down in the filter housing it can block oil flow up the tube and it has to be long enough to bring oil to the top of the filter. I'll keep looking for the drawing but someone else might post it.

When I bought my last WD45, it was missing that tube, and oil pressure was so low the valves were not oiling properly. Spend the $ and buy a tube. FWIW

Find an Allis guy in your area and see if you can buy the tube and housing together. This is a common problem as I did the same thing. My guy said it is hard to get a new tube to stay in the housing. Don't know but it was cheap enough.

Tubes are cross hatched for a tight fit.
