    Posted: 03 Mar 2010 at 9:26am
I teach a Power Technology class at a high school in Iowa and I have a group of students working on rebuilding a 201 CI gas engine out of an old WC.  My question is what is the best way to remove the handcrank/crankshaft pulley off the front of the engine?  I tried to have one of my students use a 2 jaw gear puller, and he ended up cracking the pulley.  I felt like an idiot after that for setting the student up with the wrong tool for the job.  Does anyone sell these pulleys aftermarket or can I get one from a salvage yard easily?  Thanks for any input.

I cracked the first one i did too. I even used a bearing splitter and tbar puller, thought i was doing everything right. Last one i did i used a little propane torch and held it under the bottome for a couple minutes. It came off so easy i dont think i even needed the puller. Basically threaded the screw in by hand and it came off.

I took one off my parts tractor last weekend with a small prybar and a little brass hammer. it took longer to get the setscrew out than to remove the pulley. They are available as a reproduction for something like $180 I believe. Find a boneyard and go borrow one from a donor.

UM, just for the record, I believe that there is a set screw, on top of a set screw holding that pully in place. Is it possible there is still a set screw holding things up?
