 Topic: valve cover leak ?

How common it a cast iron valve cover leak ? I put a new gasket on and it still leaks on the manifold side. or could it be coming from the head gasket ? it soaks the whole side of the engine. Im sure the gasket stayed where its supposed to, I geuss ill have to take it off and silicone it really good.

Check all surfaces for flatness. Make sure there isn't a chip missing somewhere and be VERY careful using a sealer. It will reak havoc on an engine if it gets in the oil system.

The heat from the manifold softens any gasket cement and the gasket moves. Quite common. I put the gasket on the cover with gasket cement and let it dry a few days before putting it on the engine.

I agree with heat working on RTV. If it were me, I'd use 3M super weatherstrip adhesive on the gasket to glue it to the cover. Make sure you wash off all traces of oil first with brake cleaner. Nothing sticks to oil...

What model tractor are you having trouble with? Are you using a cork gasket?

HI, its a B with rubber gasket, it is a new one, i didnt use anything to seal it. I will take it off and use the cement to glue it to the valve cover. Thanks

You know, this is not a new problem. We had valve cover leaks back in the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. Very common. We did not have the benefits of all the outstanding gasket cements. We had permetex and shellac - don't laugh.
We used to attach the valve cover upside down in a vice, put on the gasket with a generous supply of shellac, weigh the gasket in place with tools and hammers and let it sit overnight. It even leaked sometimes after that too.

I have a B that the valve cover gasket leaked after using several cork gaskets at the manifold area. The cork dries and cracks with the heat. I finally replaced it with a neoprene gasket ( FelPro # VS 3708 R) and used no sealers or cement after cleaning both metal surfaces and have had no problems since. That is what I would suggest.
