My question would be why?
The power director will hold a lot of power and is relatively easy to rebuild. Unless, you are planning very extensive engine modifications, a power director should handle all the power a D-17 engine (gas or diesel) would have. When pulling, you can leave it in either high or low, which you would have to do with a mechanical two speed.

We pulled a D17 diesel IN THE '70'S - two turbos - always started the sled with hand clutch running ATF - bolted up the foot clutch. 7th gear in 5000 class. Unless you are turning over 4000 rpm the PD clutch will not be an issue. Just as with cast iron flywheels - the clutch is cast iron as well. If still have doubt - find a D19 unit - it has 5 plates in the low side 4 high. (and no we could not keep the head gasket sealed )

Put a D19 PD in it !!!
Been there done that !!! It is EXACTLY the same design. Just has more clutches. And you wont loose the ability to shift on the fly. |
