 Topic: Transmission noise D-15D

Recently rebuilt tranny in a D-15D. Replaced 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and both sliding couplers. I set everything to factory specs. These were aftermarket parts. This is definitely not my first rebuild on a D series transmission. How ever this transmission whirs in second, and only in second. I do not think it is a bearing noise because it only makes this noise in second. To me it sounds more like a gear noise. I was wondering if running it for a while to see if it gets better or worse. I have heard noise close to this in some final drives in road gear. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Please explain more. Are you referring to the gear mesh or shim work setting end play?

Tooth contack one gear against the other. After mark parts may not be exact same as ac spects. A thousand or two can make a difference . No adj that i know of.I have heard to install gears in sets.

My first job at CAT was final inspection of marine gears. It wasn't unusual for a few to get dinged up going down the machine line before heat treat. We rolled every gear against a master gear to check wobble, run-out and parallelism of the faces. We always had a die grinder handy to smooth up those nicks.
It was uncommon to have one with irregularities all the way around, but not impossible.
That was the only job in my years of inspection where we actually fixed anything, instead of writing a rework ticket.

Some of those tractors would do that. I have one that does it in third gear. I think the gear is rubbing the reverse idler gear was what I was told by AC mechanic. You can push on shifter slightly and it goes away. Might check it out. HTH Tracy
