   I have a home made tandem axle trailer. How do I determine the weight rating of the axles? It wasn't built by me or anyone that I can contact. It has hauled a 180 Allis with cab, loader AND tree spade mounted on the loader in the past with no ill effects.

	Lloyd - sounds like to me you'll need a 14K (dual 7K axles) to haul that rig. I was figuring on buying a 12K (dual 6K) trailer next year so i'd be big enough to haul my 180 with no cab or loader, etc. How many bolts on the wheels/hubs. 3500 axles have 5 bolt, 5200 axles have 6 bolt and 6K/7K have 8 bolts. That might start to get you in the ballpark. Mike

	Mike , I have a 7,000 lb rated Corn Pro tandem trailer with 6 bolt wheels, 15" tires. The load rateing of the tires is the real limiting factor in trailer capacity , then axle rateing. My .02. Gary

	These axles don't have bolt on rims. It has 5 bolt on wedges and has 8-14.5 tires that are load rated "E". Trailer was built about 20 years ago.

	Gary - I was going by typical Dexter trailer axles to get Lloyd in a ballpark as I stated. I know it's not at all a hard rule and didn't think I was attempting to portray it as such. Lloyd - wedges sound like mobile home axles? No idea on their ratings. Mike

	6 bolt hubs or wheels are not rated for 7000#.

	Joe - I think Gary meant he had a 7K trailer with two 3500 lb axles and those axles had 6 bolt wheels instead of 5. Mike

	5 bolt wedges and 14.5 tires sounds like trailer house axles to me. Not sure of the rating.

	Is there any correlation between axle diameter and weight rating? Bearing diameter and weight rating? This trailer has never been titled. I figure I better get a homebilt trailer title and license it. I'd like to know what weight rating to use, or does the DMV set that?

	I just went through the same thing with my shop built trailer with same rims and tires. In Alabama, the DMV allows you to state what weight you will haul and issues the VIN and license based on that information. Not sure what your state will do but that is a good place to start. Alabama issued me a VIN number, I bought the tag based on the information given and am OK to use under 12000 lbs and private use only, not for hire.

	Standard house trailer 5 wedge axles are for 6000# load, tires will raise the available weight but the bearings won't take the loading long. A tandem axle set will load out 12000# BUT only IF there is a spring suspension rocker between the axles, this allows articulation through road imperfections and minimizes the shock loading to one axle.

	Most house trailer axles are limitied use. THey plan to haul to a location, then park. As DM said, the bearings may not be rated for long term use at high loads.

	Thanks for all the info. I found a trailer website that discusses trailer house axles. They state that most are either 6000 or 7000 lb axles and that there are hubs and brake drums that can be bought using 6 or 8 bolt wheels to replace the trailer house open wheel hubs. It depends if the trailer axles have welded electric brake backing plates or bolt on backing plates, which it looks like is the preferred type. So I'll have to take a close look at my axles and the brakes that are on now to figure out if they can be converted. I removed all the wooden deck as it was rotting and figured I'd go through the trailer now to update it, new wiring and paint. Thanks again for all the information.

	There are several brake setups for these axels also, size of lining face as well as drum diameter. Most times to replace the brakes it is cheaper to buy full loaded backing plate than the parts or shoes only. Several magnet variations are also used. Have one axel where there is no plate but a flimsy support and all the workings are exposed from the back. Have taken a non brake axel and welded the 4 bolt flange onto axel to accept the brake mount.

	I haven't seen one lately but 25 or 30 years ago there were some trailer that came with axles and wheels that looked like mobile home stuff but it wasn't. They were heavier rated than mobile home wheels. If your's say Load Range E on them you can look that up online. Load range E tires are what is required on F-350 and F-450 Ford trucks for example. 	You are correct, E series tires are rated at 3000# each or 6000# for an axle, it is the 5 wedge hubs that do not do well if you challenge the 6000# rate. On lowboy semi trailers they used load range H 16 ply 17.5 tires but they are really expensive and hard to find. They rate out to 9000# per pair as duals.

	I don't disagree with you. Those small 5 lug hubs don't do that well on trailers or mobile homes but it's not because they are 5 lug hubs. There are thousands of tractor trailer on the road with 5 lug Dayton 20 and 22 inch hubs and wheels. It's just that those small ones aren't made for a really heavy load.
