After watching DrAllis 175 XTD’s pull video, I had many questions. Some of which He answered - Thanks DrAllis for sharing your valued tractor/pulling insights. Exchanging his & some other forum members info, humbled me in how little I knew of a pulling sled. So I did a YouTube search & found this video. Not plugging for Logan Thomas, but did enjoy him explaining his sled. So for what it’s worth, I posted this weblink video here in the farm equipment section instead of the pulling section because I figure there’s probably others here (like myself that have never pulled) that might enjoy this 15 min tutorial video. Administration if you decide otherwise, my apologies in advance. |

Interesting. I was fascinated by these pulling videos when I first saw them but I've become less and less interested over time. Too many uncontrolled variables like mud hole that one guy managed to steer clear of and another guy didn't because the front end came up. I do tend to enjoy older "stock" more than 500hp screaming diesels. But then I learned that "stock" doesn't necessarily mean "stock". I often don't know what I'm looking at because huge number of the videos don't bother to include descriptions of any kind.

The real Super stocks are WAY more horsepower than that!!!

It's amazing how these things work. They allow a 3500 lb tractor to pull and can stop a multi engine mod ora large articulate tractor with a few adjustments.

In the over half half a century I've been pulling I've witnessed the evolution of pulling sleds from stone boat horse pull sleds to what we have today. One thing I dislike about these modern ones is the hydraulic drop pans, when they stop you it feels like a chain to an oak tree. I have pulled a few sleds that use truck air bags pressurized with a regulator to control the pan and you will never feel when the pan drops and they can stop much of the big and fast vehicles just as capable as the hydraulic pan sleds.
Some of the sleds of the past were amazing at how a seeming small sled could stop amazingly powerful vehicles. One comical incident was back in the mid 70s at a pull at Fisherville, Va. , when Danny Dean (IH 1066 Red Rooster) saw the Sitting Bull sled, made the comment "That little sled won't stop my tractor" to which the sled operator replied "we'll just have to wait and see won't we". That entire weekend and the NTPA event the only Super-Stock tractors that made it past 200' were in the 12,000 open. There were a couple pull offs in modified classes and also a pull off in the 12,000 just to make the show interesting. Also an army tank was hooked to the sled for an exhibition pull that failed to get to 300'.
