Traction Booster Spool stuck

   I just had my 170 painted, and although to the painter's credit, they were very thorough, they did get some paint on the traction booster spool.  While out mowing I must have tripped teh traction booster, because the spool went into the housing and won't come out.
I,ve tried getting pliers on it, although it is in a difficult spot, but it seems pretty solid.  Any suggestions?

	If you don't have a parts book to see a diagram go to the AGCO parts books online to show you. Use Internet Explorer as it won't work with other browsers like Firefox: http://www.agcopartsbooks.com/EpsilonWeb/login.aspx?region=NorthAmerica The parts diagram will help you see all the parts in the TB valve assembly. If it's stuck in you can push it back out by removing the rear cap and tapping it forward. The rear cap is held on by two allen wrench screws and spring that pushes it forward is inside the cap. Once you have it pushed forward, I'd try to get any overspray off with a scotchbrite pad or some very fine emery cloth. If you try to remove the whole spool from the body out the rear without getting the paint off, you may damage the very fine tolerences of the spool body dragging it out the back and getting paint contamination inside. 	Thanks Mike, I have the parts book, and was wondering about tapping it out from the back, but will get at it tonight, time permitting.

	You might have good luck getting the paint off with carb cleaner if you spray it in a little cup and dab it on. That way you won't eat the paint off of everything around the spool.

	I do have some carb cleaner, but would that be a problem for the wiper seal on the spool? I had thought a bit of varsol on a scothbrite pad might work too. Any thoughts on the best option?

	You might be right about the wiper. I'm not familiar with that valve. That is why I mentioned dabbing it on so you just get it on the paint. Fine scotchbrite or very fine emery cloth might be a better idea. Just didn't want you to scratch the spool up.

	Can you tape around it and paint on some gel paint remover. I would be worried about buffing the spool too much. Be careful not to get it on the seal. I assume you can push the spool out far enough that the paint will be out past the seal enough to make it work. Edited by Rawleigh - 26 Jul 2010 at 11:18am

	Yesterday afternoon, I removed the rear cap on the traction booster spool, and tapped it forward, to its maximum travel as you suggested. Then with some varsol on a bit of scoth brite, I started carefully removing the paint. I could only get to one side of the valve, but I found I could rotate the spool by putting a socket on the rear of the spool where the spring retainer is held on by a bolt into the rear of the spool. This allowed me to work my way around the spool, taking off the paint. I also applied lots of WD 40 while working to clean the spool. Eventually I got most of the paint off, and the spool moved freely once again. All good, and thanks very much to all of you. This discussion group is an excellent source!!
