653 Steering Clutch Removal

pull cotter pin out of brake band linkage end next to front and remove the pin. next take the roll pin or cotter key whichever you have in the pin for brake band top center of housing. slide pin toward the rear end or other final. this will give free movement of the brake band assembley. this is what you will use to lift the entire clutch unit out with. the spring that hooks in housing half way down in the final drive case and also hooks to the yoke or forks that works the sliding bearing that disengages the clutches and allows them to slip is unhooked next. also there is a pin with a spring around it that fits the end of the yoke/ fork which is now removed. the next is pulling the pin that is verticle in the yoke/fork to allow the yoke to be slid around for getting to the clip that holds the axle. when you find the clip with your fingernail probing around the end of the clutch housing in the center where the axle slides in, take a screw driver, flat type around 8 inch blade. heat and bend the end to a 90 degree bend about 1 inch back from the end. this will let you catch the end on the clip and when you feel it against the clip end pull up to release it. once lifted up the axle will side out toward the other final and should be left flush with the cone end. the next thing to do is take the six 9/16 head bolts out of the back of the clutch housing. there is a 2 1/2 inch screw cap that fits in the housing that will let you use a socket and ratchet to remove them. you will have to jack the side up enough to allow the track to be moved with a bar in order to rotate the clutches for bolt removal. i use a 2 foot lady slipper between the springs on the clutches to gently roll the track around. not a lot of pressure needed if the track is off the ground good. let me know as you progress.

You need to keep the cases clean inside , that plug in the bottom of case needs a couple holes drilled into it to prevent water staying in case . If you run it in water then change plugs to non-drilled ones .
