 Topic: WC stepdown transmission?

I am in the process of buying several parts WC tractors and one has the box behind the main transmission. The owner said it had a cornpicker on it, which I believe because it still has parts of it on the tractor. He told me it slowed the tractor down for picking corn. My question is what is the extra transmission worth? I will probably sell the whole parts tractor to get a little money back in my checkbook. Or is it best just put it on ebay to the highest bidder? Suggestions or comments all welcome Thanks

One sold on e-bay last fall, I'm not sure on the price but I believe it was around $400.

Rich in Rolla Mo showed me several WC's with two transmissions. It is quite simple once you see one. They are used in the Cane fields to reduce ground speed. They are installed in the spot where the manual lift goes and then about a two inch spacer is placed where the frame side rails bolts to the rear axle to make up for the difference in length.

Could such a step down box be fitted to something newer, say a D-17? Was there such a thing as a step-UP box?

I never had hands on with the one that sold on e-bay but I did call the guy with questions. He claimed it was a 3 position gear box. You have straight thru standard speed and you have step-up and step-down. He said it changed the ground speed 25% either way, which didn't seem like a lot to me, I was thinking 50% would be pretty nice.

As fa as I knew, they never had three speeds in that box, you had either a straight thru and stepdown or straight thru and stepup. the center position was nuetral. But maybe they did make a 3 spd but don't think so. Boy that would have been some selection of gears.
We had one that was a step up and dad traded the WC for a WD - to bad the WD's didn't have any options for putting in a stepup tranny. Sure wish we had kept that old WC.
The WD could have used a good road gear and a faster 3rd gear for jobs like raking hay etc.

I have 1 in my wc pulling tractor. From what i know about this it a 30% reduction. They were used on mounted corn pickers to slow the ground speed down.With the lever pulled back u are in the reduction. In the middle is neutral. and ahead is direct. It works good for me in our open classes. I can run road gear with 15.5 38 tires in the 3000 lbs class.

The 3 position box ix very rare. The standard with either up or down is more common. I have seen them sell anywhere from 400 to 650.I have the standard with step up for my caravan tractor. I have not checked the speed difference, but those Farmal M's have a lot harder time pulling away from me now.

I have a step up in my WF and it is 25% over in high. I had it apart and put new bearings in it and counted the teeth plus turned the shaft with marks on them to find ratio. Makes a big difference in speed. HTH Mark L
