I was browsing through some things at school the other day and discovered how to look at the old Popular Mechanics and other magazines on Google using the "books" search. I was scrolling through and found this little article on page 838 of the Dec 1939 issue. Don't know if it will bring up the exact page or not, but heres the link:

Pretty cool, Morton.  Love those steam trains!!!  My Dad had a large collection of those magazines back into the '30's. I still have a few of them. Interesting reading from today's time frame.

There's a lot of interesting articles in that magazine, thanks for posting. I tried sending you a PM Morton, but your mailbox was full. I'll try tomorrow night in hopes you dumped a couple, or PM me with your email address.

there is a box where you can bump page up or down,  enter 838 and you will go to the model 40 combine if you are roaming through the magazine and want to go back

What's really amazing is all of today's  'new' stuff that was truly new  or invented back in '39 !!

I'd really like to get the real magazine to read it...online reading just isn't the same !!!

The article on supercharging of engines says that they were exploring the possibility of driving the compressor wheel with a turbine driven from the exhaust gases as a way to maximize efficiency.
And another article showed a cutaway of a German Junkers aircraft with a Diesel engine.  I've seen one of these engines up close at the Canada Aviation Museum (in Ottawa)...
Opposed Piston; two crankshafts.

Ok, for all the things that have arisen through this post! lol

1. Glenn and Todd, I was studying! Thats the best part about it! lol. I was looking for a project to do in Metal tech and always knew that Popular Mechanics was big on "How to" build articles when I stumbled upon this. What really caught my eye was the cover.

GBACFan, Try again, I just dumped a whole bunch. Didn't realize it was that full!!! Sorry about that.
