Just your thoughts about using an automotive type cooling system flush in my old CA. The radiator was re-cored several years ago, but I would like too clean the cooling system before installing new anti-freeze. I'm somewhat reluctant to use something that may cause damage to the "o" rings or head gasket. Seems like my Dad used to use a home made solution, but can't remember. Thanks |

I used an acid based heavy duty cleaner on my Oliver 60 which has an engine very similar to the CA. It had huge amounts of crud in the water jackets. I saw lots of stuff come out when I drained it. Later on when I overhauled it, there was still a bunch of stuff around the back side of #4. It didn't hurt the engine or anything else.

After you neturalize the acid cleaner, flush the engine good with water and I refill with distilled water and anti-freeze. My water is loaded with minerals that will plug up anything over time. I think the distrilled water might help with deposits building up.

They use to use Lewis LYE, as a cleaner but as it is a base it will not remove the water scale. You could use a couple gallons of vinigar as it is acidic and disolves the mineral buildup. Rinse with baking soda after draining then with clean water.

I had the same thing happen to me on a little 354 IH I have.
The water pump went bad and while replacing it I stuck a water hose in the water jacket to flush out any mud and crud. While it did a good job it left so much junk piled up behind the #4 sleeve it overheated that cyclinder, scuffed the piston and sleeve, and melted the "O" ring. It let the anti-freeze flow into the oil pan. What a mess it was.
