I had the PD rebuilt several years ago, but it never worked in low range.   Always jumped out of gear and made strange noises.
So it has been nice and I tired moving the shims, got it so it would stay either low or high range when you moved the pd handle.   But when you tired it out, it made strange sounds, and jumped out of both high and low range, and you could not hold it in place.
So what do I need to look for.   Kept the shims in either 1 and 3 and the long ones the center.

I think there is some kind of lock that holds the power director in low or high range under where the handle is at. Never looked under there but there has to be something there that holds it in high or low. Someone will chime in that knows about this.

Long time since Ive seen ya Norm, how ya bin??    Sounds line the roller and ramps in the clutch backing plates are worn,  if worn they wont allow the clutch linkage to go over center and stay in.     As far as noises if the linkage moves to far it can contact some of the rotating parts and make a noise.     Id say your gonna have to take it out and  and look it over, something isnt right.  HTH

By the way, make sure the lever is tight on the shaft, sometimes the setscrew holding the lever is loose, so it wont move the internal linkage far enough to go over center.    I dont know on yours but some tractors had a setscrew in the housing that held the  shifting for to the shaft, later tractors had two half moon keys and not a setscrew.   Good Luck

Thanks for the reply, Skip.   This tractor has the half moon keys.   Did check the bearings last night, seems like the front bearing on the transmission is loose, but will check out your suggestions.
Tractor has had a hard life, lots of neglect, but it coming back to life.
