After talking with Brenda and Bill at Sandy Lake, it looks like my D17D was rebuilt with OEM pistons for a D15D. Part # 4513346-4 is still a good number that does in the D15D. The problem I have is the pistons stand out .060 above the deck and are hitting the head. A new head gasket before use is .065 thick. The used gasket measured .055. What's interesting is the D15D engine has the same bore and wrist pin diameter. Without looking, the stroke must be different. Also when I told Bill that this engine started easily without heat or ether, he said that's definitely not like most of them.

Looks like I'm going to be going through this engine with the correct pistons. Bill is going to see if he can get someone at AGCO to check some blue prints. There doesn't apper to be a spec for piston stand out, at least we haven't been able to find one yet. Hopefully Agco will provide the info.

Update: I talked to my machine shop and they show that the pistons should be .040 above the deck. With my pistons coming .050 to .060 above, it could be as simple as the block could have had .010 shaved and that would acount for the excess piston height. Since the pistons are flat on top with no valve reliefs, it will be easy to shave the pistons.

According to the info the machine shop has, the D15D and D17D have the same bore and stroke. One of these days, I'll have it all figured out...

A person who uses a machine shop in a engine rebuild is always money ahead of the person who chooses not to ,unless he owns a machine shop.

I agree whole heartedly ML. I just got off the phone with Bill at Sandy Lake and he says there are still a few good ol boys at AGCO. ACGO pointed us to a service bulletin from June of 81 that gives a tolerance for piston protrusion of .0017 to .0299. The sleeves are flush + or - .002. Piston crown to center of wrist pin bore is 2.269 to 2.273. The pistons and sleeves are the same between the D15D and D17D. If the block has been decked to fix sleeve position, the pistons can be shaved to correct protrusion.
I guess now I get to take it apart and see what needs to be corrected.
