I finally made it up to my farm after a absence of two months.  I started my CA and it started right up but I had no oil pressure at all.  It always has low oil pressure, but in the 3 years I have owned it, it has never had 0 pressure.  The oil level was fine and it ran well.  What could cause it to have no oil pressure?  Can it lose prime to the guage?

Probably lost the prime to the pump. Squirt some oil down the main oil pressure feed pipe that runs through the bellhousing. Put the lines back on and fire it up. O.P. should come back... (hopefully)

A good condition CA engine has approx 10-15 lbs of oil pressure (somewhere in the middle to upper 3/4 of the gage scale). The pressure may drop just a tad when the engine heats up good and is idling. Steve's suggestion about re-priming the oil pump is good (these tractors can lose the prime if not run for an extended period of time); disconnect the line at the Oil filter (or T to OF) and squirt oil into the line until it is full. Reconnect the line and start it up to see if the oil pressure returns; you may have to try several times to re-prime the pump.

A cause of low, or no oil pressure, can also be a missing tube (or non-seated tube) in the oil filter and a poor quality oil filter. Replace the tube (Tony and Barb can help here) if missing or damaged and install a good filter (I use Fram C130).

Another casue can be missing, or busted up, plugs in the valve rocker shaft. You have to pull the valve cover to check this condition out.

Another cause could be a a plugged up pickup screen in the oil pan. You have to remove the oil pan to check this out.

Another cause could be broken drive pin to the oil pump from the back of the camshaft. You have to split the tractor and pull the camshaft to fix this problem.

Good luck with finding out where the problem lies and fixing it.

Try another Gage. I have had a brand new one out of the box that did not work.

My bet is the oil pump has lost its prime.  If there was pressure from the pump on the existing gage when the tractor was last used, nothing else has changed.  I used to have to prime the oil pump on my B but not since I have been starting it up for a short time every few weeks.

Thanks for the helpful replies.  When I bought the CA 3 years ago it had been overhauled and runs quite well.  The original oil guage was broken and I replaced it with a new guage from one of the forum vendors.  However, even with the new guage, the correct fram filter, the tube in place inside the filter, and the proper weight  of oil, I have never been able to get the oil pressure to rise above the "N" or lowest setting on the oil guage .  The tractor runs well, doesn't use oil, but the low pressure worries me.  Any suggestions that might help improve this?  Thanks.  Will Pratt

Sounds to me like you have bypass in the oil pump and setting the oils seeped back into the pan as  the air got into the pump.  Probly prime the pump and it will be fine until it sets for an extended time.  Probly the fix would be to disassemble the oil pump and check the ball in the stem for pits as well as resurface the pump cover. With the oil pressure you have the vanes and vane springs would more than likely fine.

Added Note::
You will not have oil perssure in the rocker arm shaft. The gage pressure is not bled off thru the rocker arms because of the orifice in the Tee. If you had pressure in the rocker arm shaft and removed the rocker arm cover the oil would squirt out every where instead of just gently running over the rocker arms. With a plug being gone you would not have the rocker arm shaft full to the brim and over flowing to oil the rocker arms. Differnet problem. Something not to be over looked but has nothing to do with oil pressure.

It's a long shot but I once had one on a D series tractor (don't remember if it was a 10 or a 14) that had a piece of oil sludge in the line.  It did the same thing.  One day it had pressure, next time I started it it didn't.  Before I tore into the pump I'd pull the guage, bump it over and see if I had flow to the guage and check the guage to make sure it's working.

Thanks for all the good suggestions.  I will be back up there over Christmas break and will try some of the things that have been mentioned.

One last question.  If the pump has lost it's prime, does that mean that it is not pumping oil at all to the engine or just to the guage?

If the pump lost its prime it don't pump anything. It is just full of air, not oil.
