Hey, someone have a fitting size on the test fittings for trans system on my 7G? I forgot to check that last weekend. BTW, Zimmerman in Versailles, Mo, is parting out another 7G, believe it is an A model. I got my new trans control valve there, but someone already snagged the trans pump.

Hi doc
test port sizes are 1/4 npt
Test pressures at engine high idle [full rpm] oil at operating temp.
pump pressure 230 psi
clutch engagement pressure 150-170 psi
lube pressure on opposite to engaged clutch 10-15 psi.
also checking the pressures at mid and low idle rpm will give you a indication of pump condition and/or clutch condition, ideally pressures should not vary by more than 15% between high and low idle.
Also the suction screen on right side of case is only trans scavenge pump. Main suction port is through the same screen as steering and push start pump; yes the arkward one at front of trans.

thanks for the extra info. I'll get another crack at this on Saturday. Going to check main pressure first to verify gauge and then go from there. I hope it's not a shot pump as those things are hard to come by, only gaskets available still. Does the HD/G 6 use the same pump?

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention, I may be using wrong fluid, I'm switching to atf which is thinner to see if this increases flow.

Hi Doc
HD6G is gear drive.
HD7G has same trans as a HD6EP; both powershift.
Both machines use the same pump prior to 6ep 18754 and 7g 24276; after these s/ns both changed to a slightly bigger pump. But think the later pump will fit earlier ones; or you can get a aftermarket pump; make up a mounting adapter plate and bolt it all together as someone did with my 6ep
cheers and good luck

Minnpar didn't have any hard parts for the early pump, but I think my machine has the later pump as the ports exit in pairs 180 degrees apart. My manual tags this as a later HD6ec or HD7g pump. If I need a new pump, I'll probably trouble you for details on that adaptor setup. Regards, Corey

hi Doc
Yes later pumps have the ports 180 degrees apart and were made by cessna; who are now part of eaton hyds and maybe still available thru them. You are lucky as adapter plate is already on these later pumps. Mine was a homemade affair by previous owner and needs repair; have had one attempt to reseal, but need to have another go.
Hope to spend some time on AC this week as is a few problems to repair on mine.
When you pressure check your trannny; make sure it stalls the converter in all gears; ie locks up driveshaft. If driveshaft turns in any gears it means that drive clutch is slipping.
Torque converter stall also loads engine to a definite rpm load, and with everything going right should load a 7G to 1925 rpm. HD6ep is 1840 rpm
Cheers Merv

well, my problem is a little more clear tonight, as I went down in the pouring rain and did some pressure checks. Main pressure shortly after warmup was around 175. Lube pressure at 12. After running for half an hour, these pressures dropped considerably and required much more RPM to achieve, down to 130 and less than 5 on lube. No drop outs in any particular gear. Also, steering system began to get balky, and would momentarily fail to steer . I guess this must be the strainer in front of trans, as it is a common link for these two systems. There is just ONE strainer in that housing, right? I tried to pull it, but hydraulic fluid and cold, wet tools don't go well together, not to mention by flashlight while laying in a puddle. Man I need to build a shed down there! I guess it'll have to wait till next week.

hi Cory, no i don,t know what pump has been adapted to mine, although i can tell you what the originall pump specs should be for original pump. All info is in the 7G/6ep service manuel.
Yes the one suction screen at front of trans feeds both trans pressure pump and steering pump; so fix this you solve both problems; this is how i got my ep; was dead in a paddock with very little drive and steer. cleaned all screens, replaced filters, flushed bevel gear case with diesel; then refilled with some 2nd hand hyd oil [will fill with new ATF after another flushing] and yep she drives and steers. Check hoses for anywhere it can suck air instead of oil as you will have similar problems, although in this case oil will be airated.
good luck, Merv

Some hydraulic pumps can be rebuilt, with O-rings and a new insert. I know that Vickers pumps are that way, but not sure about the pumps on the 6's and 7's. I recommend you check with the major hydraulic pump supply vendors, particularly vendors that are in service areas around air ports, as airlines use a lot of hydraulic apparatus. Good luck.

On my NH 785 skid steer I had a Cesna pump go bad, NH wanted $700 for the pump. Had small hyd shop look it over , found new Cesna pump for $200 but the NH pump had input shaft that was not avalable except through them and only with their $700 pump.
Old shaft into new pump, $25 charge for labor / back running. Same with relief valves NH $150 each I believe, 4 of them , 2 each wheel motor. Found them for $65 through same hyd shop. New style and servicable as NH type were not .
