Just came in from pulling the head on my D17. It was shiny in 4 of the 6 combustion chambers. The gasket was cracked between 3 and 4. After cleaning everything off, I cannot slip a .0015 feeler gauge under my machinist's straight edge anywhere on the head or block. All of the sleeves except for #1 stand out .0015 to .002. #1 is .007 below. #1 did not show any evidence of coolant entering the cylinder though and the rear coolant passage was ok as well.
It looks to me like the real problem was bolt torque. Most of the head bolts I was able loosen with a 6" wrench. I don't know what the torque specs are right off, but I'm betting I shouldn't have been able to break them loose with a short wrench. I'm going to send the head off Monday to be magna fluxed and surfaced. With only 1 sleeve low, I'm going to try the double fire ring on the one and see what happens. |

We did a D-17 diesel a few yaers back that had problems with the head gasket going out,2 things we did corrected it...so far. An old allis dealer told me to never touch the head gasket or mating surfaces with your bare fingers prepare the mating surfaces with a coarser finish not a high polish, clean it with either or tritechrachloride put the gasket on, but only touch the sides not the face than torque down. The other thing we learned was to clean out all the holes with air pressure run a tap in so the threads are perfect, than use Lawson Brand tuff torque bolts and washers, these bolts when torqued down do not relax, for example a 100# of torque on a fastner grade 8 only applies roughly 65# of squeeze, where a Lawson tuff torque at 100# applies 95#, which is alot more pressure, and to date a problematic head has not been touched again. I can get you the bolts and washers if you need them, and cant find a Lawson dealer.

I was really thinking about replacing the head bolts. I ran a tap through all of the bolt holes and wire brushed the threads.

The sleave that's .007 below will be a problem. I'd pull that sleave and have a machinist make a shim. Kcgrain is right about making sure everything is clean. I use lacquar thinner to clean the surfaces of the block and head. I also bought all new studs from ARP for mine. I know we are not suposed to put anything on the gaskets, but after having mine apart twice, my machinist gave me a head gasket sealer that he uses on his race cars. Don't know what it's called, but it's a clear thin gel that gets hard when it gets hot. It worked good for me. Kraig (WI)

the sleeve thats 007 below is gonna be a problem, just like Kraig says. I think a double fire ring on that sleeve is gonna be to much as it wont crush that far down and may cause a problem on #2 as it wont cruch to proper amount. You need to knock that one out and have a shim made, I know its a lot more work but I dont thing its gonna go without shimming #1. HTH
