I have a gleaner EIII with the 4 cylinder. Some one said its the same engine in a D17. My parts book doesn't show the 4 cyl engine for the EIII. and the service manual shows different spark plugs and distributors and adjustments for different serial numbers. but I can't find the serial number. There has been way to many hands on this machine before I got it. The plugs that are in there don't match any of the ones listed. If you know where they put the serial number please let me know? Thanks.

Left side of engine block, a little back from the carb, should be stamped , not cast into block.Your number should end with a Z.

Thanks for getting back to me. Well I went and looked. of course on this combine it's in the back next to the bin and almost impossible to get at. Any way I couldn't find them. Are the numbers big and deep or just lightly stamped. none of the numbers that are in the book end with a Z. Is it down and back from the carb. I'll try to get some kind of cleaner and find a way if i can get a better area to look at maybe I know someone with a small camera to can poke around back there.

The hose connecting the air cleaner to the carb may need to be removed to see it, it is about midway up the block.
