The guy is a distant cousin and said he hadn't used the tractor in 2 or 3 years. The last time he tried to start it the starter "stuck" so he pulled the battery cable. He said he won't sell it without having his mechanic come look it over and make sure it runs good. The sheet metal looks a little banged up, not bad, missing side shields(they might be hanging on the wall somewhere). The right front is low, and left rear is flat, probably pump up to load it on a trailer. All the tires look like they have been on it a long time, maybe original? The rears are basically bald but being inside have no weather checking, and looked like 16.9's??
He said there might be a problem with the 3 point as it wouldn't raise the last time he had it running. When he bought the tractor years ago, he used it for a little over a year as his main tractor on 80 acres and then had the engine overhauled at the nearest Allis dealer($2500at the time). Since then it has only been used to haul manure and run the mixer mill. I think I can buy it for $2500 after he gets it looked at. I didn't tell Liz, but I think I should have this tractor. I'll know more when I can test drive it. With factory 3 point would it have power steering and would the PS work off the hydraulic pump? Any things I can look for when I go back to test drive it other than checking the power director for solid engagement and downhill back pressure to make sure it stays in all gears? Like an idiot, I got half way home and remembered I had my camera in my jacket all the time I was looking. Dahhh!!!!!!!! |

Well, your thinking is right on as far as I can see. My wife tends to not see things like I do though...

Charlie I do not believe PS works off hydraulics. Most if not all Ser.IV would have power steering.I am sure someone will point out if I am wrong.

The PS don't work off the hydraulic pump. It has a PS pump that runs off a belt on front of engine.
The price sounds good. Two nice D17 iv brought 6000.00 and 5800.00 at a sale near me last Sat. MACK

Check that the power director stays in the high side, and that the brakes work the way they are supposed to!!! I'd also check the hydraulics, at least the remotes with a cylinder. If pump is bad, $$$$$

D17 Series 1's PS pump is between governor and distributor... why would they put a belt-driven on the series IV?
Do it, Charlie!!! If she asks you why, tell her it's 'cause Dave was stuck in bed, and growed a beard... she'll understand. |
